As a recovered addict with 9 years clean, I know what temptation feels like. I’ve faced it more times than I can count, and one thing I’ve learned is that recovery isn’t just about addressing the addiction itself. There are habits, environments, memories, and little things hidden within those habits that we don’t always realize we still need to address.

Today, I was reminded of that in a way I never expected.

I was working in a building where I knew there were people actively using. I was in another part of the building, doing my job, and honestly, I wasn’t thinking about it at all. I thought I was completely removed from that situation.

Then I started replacing a vanity top.

When I pulled the old top off, I saw something very familiar—something that had once been part of my own life.

For a moment, I was almost blindsided.

I had gloves on, so I thought I was protected. I reached down and almost got stuck by something I hadn’t seen.

And that hit me harder than the physical danger.

Because it reminded me that sometimes we think we’re protected just because we have our defenses up. But gloves don’t make you invincible. They’re rubber. They can help protect you, but they can still fail.

Recovery is a lot like that.

Nine years clean doesn’t mean I’m immune. It means I’ve learned how to recognize danger, acknowledge it, and keep moving forward.

Sometimes temptation doesn’t announce itself.

Sometimes it hides underneath something you’re simply trying to remove from your life.

Today reminded me that I have to stay aware. I have to respect where I’ve been, recognize the things that can trigger me, and never become so comfortable in my recovery that I think nothing can ever catch me off guard.

If you’re in recovery, don’t be ashamed when something unexpectedly triggers you.

Recognize it.

Step away.

Talk about it.

Pray about it.

And keep going.

Nine years clean today, and I’m still learning.

That’s okay.

Recovery isn’t about pretending you’re no longer vulnerable.

It’s about knowing you’re vulnerable—and choosing not to go back.

One day at a time. 🙏

Good morning! As you begin this new day, remember that every sunrise is another reminder of God’s mercy, grace, and faithfulness. Yesterday is behind you, tomorrow is not promised, but today is a gift placed in your hands. Walk into it with courage, humility, and a heart that seeks God first.

Words of Wisdom

Life has a way of placing both flowers and weeds in our path. The flowers remind us of God’s blessings, while the weeds teach us discernment, patience, and perseverance. Not everyone who walks beside you is meant to stay for the journey, and not every closed door is a punishment. Sometimes God removes what distracts you so He can prepare you for what He has planned.
