When you’re first learning the trade, one of the most important things to understand is that a door has six sides — not two. The top and bottom matter just as much as the faces and edges. These surfaces need to be primed and painted because they protect the door from moisture, movement, and swelling.

Priming all six sides preserves the job, protects the wood, and keeps the door stable over time. In some states, sealing the top and bottom is actually code. Even when it’s not, it’s still best practice. Follow the steps, prep the substrate, and don’t rely on “self‑priming” paint. Proper priming makes every part of the job easier and ensures a professional finish.

This is a Jingle I wrote. Hopefully it goes through. Let me know if you hear it. I'd be interested. And also come check out the blog.

In the mid-1850s, German immigrants settled here and built incredible "I-houses"—two stories tall, two rooms wide, and just one room deep. Our home is a beautifully restored example.

I actually worked on its sister house down the road, built by the same family. Tragically, the new owners completely gutted it with zero plan. They ripped off the porch, stripped the original wood that had been protected for decades under aluminum siding, and ruined a piece of history. Good luck to them trying to get HardieBoard now.

I'm launching my blog to share decades of restoration experience, leftover material, and traditional techniques. The old ways are safer, more eco-friendly, and they actually last. Check out the blog to save yourself some serious money and do it right!
