Stephen Foster often played this piano at a neighbor’s home in Pittsburgh. According to the story, while he was playing, he noticed a young girl named Nelly Bly dancing with a broom. Inspired by the moment, Foster wrote “Nelly Bly,” an upbeat song celebrating the way music can bring joy to everyday chores.
The piano was later presented to the State of Florida by Mrs. Ralph L. Malady, Foster’s great-granddaughter from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
