🚨 Before you water your lawn today… read this! 🚨
With heat indexes expected to reach 105°F over the next few days, now is the time to help protect your lawn, landscaping, and home from the extreme heat.
Here are a few tips and tricks to help everything make it through the heat wave:
💧 Best time to water: 5:00 AM – 9:00 AM
This allows water to soak into the soil before the sun causes it to evaporate.
🌙 Second best: Water after sunset when temperatures begin to cool.
🚫 Avoid watering between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Most of the water will evaporate before your lawn and plants can benefit.
🌱 Water deeply instead of every day. A deep soaking encourages stronger, deeper root growth.
✂️ Raise your mower blade and avoid cutting your grass too short. Taller grass helps shade the soil and retain moisture.
🪴 Check hanging baskets, potted plants, and flowers twice a day. They dry out much faster than plants in the ground.
🌳 Give newly planted trees and shrubs extra attention. They need consistent watering to establish healthy root systems during extreme heat.
🌿 Refresh your mulch. A layer of mulch helps keep soil cooler and reduces moisture loss.
❄️ Replace or check your furnace/AC filter. A clean filter helps your air conditioner run more efficiently and keeps your home cooler.
🌬️ Keep your outdoor A/C unit clear of grass clippings, weeds, and debris so it can breathe properly.
🚰 Inspect outdoor faucets, hoses, and sprinklers for leaks. Catching a small leak now can save water and money.
🚪 Check weatherstripping around doors and windows. Keeping cool air inside can help lower energy bills during these hot days.
🪵 Protect decks and fences. Extended sun exposure can dry out wood over time, so keep an eye out for cracking or fading.
🔥 Grilling? Keep grills well away from your home, fences, decks, and dry landscaping to reduce fire risks.
🐾 Don’t forget your pets! Make sure they have plenty of fresh water, shade, and avoid walking them on hot pavement during the hottest part of the day.
🏡 A little preventative maintenance goes a long way. Taking a few minutes now can help protect your home, lawn, and landscaping during these record-breaking temperatures.
Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay safe this week! ☀️💙
