Did you know that May is National Water Safety Month?
Remember these tips to ensure everyone has a great time in the water:
- Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards
- Always swim with a buddy
-If you go boating, wear a life jacket
-Install and use barriers around your home pool or hot tub
-Actively supervise children whenever around the water
-Always stay within arm’s reach of young children and avoid distractions
-Keep toys not in use away from the pool and out of sight
-Reach or throw aid to distressed swimmers

WHAT IS BACKWASHING?! 🧐 Backwash, or backwashing, is a method to thoroughly clean a swimming pool's filter and avoid having to clean it manually. The backwashing process reverses the flow of water to flush out contaminants from a swimming pool filter. It should be carried out until water runs clear through the waste line.

WHEN TO BACKWASH?! 🧐 It usually takes just a few minutes. Typically, you should backwash sand filters every two to four weeks, and DE filters require backwashing every four to six weeks. If you lose track, you can also check your filter’s pressure gauge or your pool’s water quality. You'll know it's time to perform the backwashing routine when the pressure gauge indicates a pressure rise of 8 to 10 pounds above the clean or "startup" pressure. Also, backwash if a major storm or weather event has occurred in your region or a there is a major algae outbreak (any color).

HOW TO BACKWASH?! 🧐Instructions vary according to your filter type; it's best to consult the website of the filter manufacturer, if possible. Basically, this is how it is done with a DE filter:

Step 1: Turn off pool equipment.
Step 2: Rotate the valve to the “Backwash” position.
Step 3: Turn equipment back on and run the first cycle.
Step 4: Turn the equipment off again.
Step 5: Rotate the valve to the "Rinse" position.
Step 6: Turn equipment back on and run the second cycle.
Step 7: Repeat steps 1-6 two more times.
Step 8: Turn the equipment off again.
Step 9: Rotate the valve to the “Filter” position.
Step 10: Turn equipment back on and add new DE powder.
