Aug. 7, 2026 – Big Grass Fire Update

The Big Grass Fire grew by nearly 50,000 acres yesterday and overnight... 50,000 acres. The fire now totals over 443,000 acres.

The majority of that growth occurred on the southern end of the fire, but the northern and central portions were also extremely active.

The south end of the fire is now bordering the South Fork of the Owyhee Canyon. This fire has been so unpredictable that it's impossible to say whether it will jump the canyon and move into even more remote, rugged, and difficult-to-access country.

As the fire pushes south east, it's moving out of the dense juniper stands and into sagebrush country. That can be both good and bad. Sagebrush is generally easier for firefighters to work in than thick junipers, but it is also a finer, more receptive fuel that can allow fire to spread much more rapidly under the right conditions.

Fire managers continue to focus much of their effort on the northern end of the fire, which is understandable given the greater threat to communities and infrastructure in that direction. Meanwhile, the southern portion of the fire continues to make significant runs with no real sign of slowing down.

Yesterday was not a good day for anyone battling the Big Grass Fire. Unfortunately, today's forecast of extreme fire danger, very low humidity, and high temperatures suggests we could see another day of rapid fire growth—possibly even worse than yesterday.
