Our plumbers have seen some truly terrifying things. Here are the scariest things found lurking in drains. Read at your own risk. 👻

🕷️ The Hair Monster. A slimy, tangled creature that grows in bathroom drains. It feeds on shampoo, soap scum, and your patience.

🧟 The Grease Zombie. Bacon grease poured down the sink looks harmless while it’s hot. Then it cools, hardens, and comes back to clog your pipes.

💀 “Flushable” Wipes. They say flushable on the package. Your sewer line strongly disagrees.

👻 The Phantom Toy. Action figures, toy cars, a whole family of plastic dinosaurs. If something small went missing, we may know where it is.

🦴 Food Scrap Graveyard. Eggshells, coffee grounds, and potato peels pile up in the garbage disposal until something gives.

🧛 Tree Roots. They creep into your sewer line in search of water and slowly strangle it from the inside.

Your water heater is about to work its hardest all year. Colder incoming water means longer heating cycles, and holiday guests mean more showers, more dishes, and more laundry. Hard water leaves mineral sediment at the bottom of the tank. That sediment makes your heater run longer, raises your energy bill, and wears the tank out faster. Flushing it now, before winter demand hits, keeps it efficient when you need it most.

Not sure if yours needs attention? Listen to it.

• Popping or rumbling: sediment buildup. Water trapped under the minerals is boiling and bursting through. This is the classic sign it’s time to flush.
• Crackling or sizzling: on an electric heater, the heating element may be coated in scale. On a gas heater, it can be condensation hitting the burner, which is worth checking if it’s new.
• Banging or knocking: heavy sediment shifting, or water hammer in your lines.
• Screeching or whistling: a valve that’s partly closed or restricted.
• Hissing: possibly a leak, or the pressure relief valve releasing. Don’t ignore this one.

A quiet tick as the pipes expand is usually normal. A heater that’s getting louder every month is asking for help.

Most tanks should be flushed once a year. If you hear any of these sounds, see water around the base, or your hot water runs out faster than it used to, give us a call. We’ll flush it, check the anode rod and relief valve, and let you know how much life it has left.

This one is a great example of why we look past the original problem. While Tony was fixing the pump, he spotted a check valve clogged with gravel and debris. A clogged check valve lets water flow back into the pit, which makes your pump work overtime and wear out faster. Catching it now means a lot fewer headaches down the road.

First freeze will be here sooner than you know it! A frozen spigot can split the pipe inside your wall, and you often won't find the leak until spring. Take 5 minutes this weekend and run through this checklist:

✅ Disconnect your garden hose, drain it, and store it inside
✅ Find the indoor shut-off valve for your spigot (usually in the basement or crawlspace, on the pipe running to the outside wall)
✅ Turn the indoor valve off
✅ Open the outdoor spigot and let the leftover water drain out
✅ If your indoor valve has a small bleeder cap, place a bucket underneath, loosen it to release trapped water, then tighten it back up
✅ Leave the outdoor spigot open for the winter
✅ Add a foam faucet cover for extra protection on cold nights

Have a frost-free spigot? You can skip the indoor valve, but you still need to disconnect the hose. A connected hose keeps it from draining and can still crack the pipe.
