How to keep your grass lush and green during the hot summer.

This year we’ve focused on growing our landscape business including laying sod, weekly maintenance and lawn care, planting and landscape design. Often times we are asked about how to properly care for and maintain your grass to avoid dryness and brown spots.

Below are some tips on how to care for your grass to help keep the lawn looking fresh and green all summer long.

Mow
Mowing in the morning or evening is always best. Make sure to set the mower at minimum 3 inches. Grass blades can be lower than 3 inches but will require more water and care.

Water
Watering in the morning is the best time to hydrate the lawn. Watering in the morning gives the soil enough time to soak in the water before the heat of the day evaporates it.
A rule of thumb (for most lawns) is a lawn needs at least 1”-1 ½” of water per week. One inch of water or rain is equivalent to 623 gallons per 1,000 square feet. Running your sprinklers about 30-35 minutes yields approximately 1/2 inch of water. Water deeply 2-3 times per week.

Fertilize
Nitrogen is found in fertilizer which keeps all the new growth green during the summer. Fertilize during the warm season and wait to fertilize during the cool season. If you have a cool season grass, wait to fertilize. These are dormant in the summer, and fertilizer will trigger too much new growth for them to stay green.

This inspiring message reminds me of how trees speak to us in many ways. Being outside on the luscious green grass and near my majestic oak trees reminds me of my connection with nature. The flowers that blooms revamping our yard in spring and the green foliage that emerge from our branches that provide us with shade to sit and soak in summer’s breeze. Trees are the hallmark of our family gatherings. They lift my spirits and take me to elevated heights of consciousness and awareness. They remind me of my true essence and of God’s priceless gift to our planet and humanity.

Seven years ago, my daughter and I were at a nearby playground and noticed a tree, old and majestic, standing about 4 ft. away from us. We were instantly drawn to it as if it were calling for help. My daughter walked towards the tree and spun around playfully touching the stump and talking to the tree as if she was having a conversation with it. I walked over and gently laid my hands on the tree and instantly connected with their conversation. The tree told us that she was sad because she was going away. Somehow, we were able to understand that one of its greatest joys was being near the playground watching little children laugh and play. The energy of the tree was so intense that we stayed there hugging, listening, and feeling her strong energy permeate throughout our bodies. Before we left we thanked her for her for the conversation and told her not to worry, we'd be back to see her in a few days.

When we returned to the park less than a week later, the tree was gone. My daughter sobbed, and my heart ached as I saw the wood chip remains of what once was a beautiful Maple on the ground. We were saddened but grateful for this magical experience.

Every moment of the year, there are countless reasons to love your trees. Trees shower us with love as well. They benefit us emotionally, economically and environmentally. Plus, our beloved trees experience unforgettable moments with us.
