What looks like just a pile of bricks is actually a major step toward restoring hope for one homeowner in Cary, North Carolina.

After the devastating loss of her husband just a few months ago, she and her supportive family began making small but meaningful decisions to care for the beloved home they had shared for more than three decades.

What began as an entryway safety modification soon became something much greater: a step toward healing, renewed confidence, and finding her footing in a life that suddenly looks very different.

Every aging brick we removed and every new step and handrail we installed meant she could enter her home more safely. It also meant her family could worry a little less about the possibility of a fall.

The work we have the privilege of doing comes with a meaningful exchange of trust. Families invite us into their homes, share their concerns, and allow us to help protect the people and places they love most. We never take that responsibility lightly.

Her new stairs and railings have given her greater safety, independence, and a renewed excitement for the home she loves.

And we love it, too.

Because sometimes rebuilding an entrance can become part of rebuilding a life. One safer step at a time. 💗

LOOK WHO’S JOINING US! We’re thrilled to welcome Aging in Place North Carolina as a Friend of RPC Supporter for A Simply Southern Luncheon featuring Sara McDaniel of !

For those who know , Founder & CEO of , you know his heart for helping others runs deep.

Del and his family have been friends of RPC for years. We’ve loved having his creativity, marketing expertise, and event leadership supporting our mission. But recently, his own family’s journey inspired an entirely new mission.

Last year, Del’s mother, now in her 80s, fell and broke her hip, requiring major surgery and extensive rehabilitation. He shifted life around to care for her.

Caregiving is nothing new to him. Growing up with two older brothers with developmental disabilities, caring for family has always been part of his life.

Today, Del and his wife, Kimberly, are part of the sandwich generation, raising their adorable 4-year-old son while navigating the responsibilities of caring for aging parents.

And they realized millions of families are navigating similar challenges.

After years of leadership in marketing and construction, they decided to pursue something closer to their hearts.

Aging in Place North Carolina was born.

Today, Del and his team of Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists (CAPS), a designation offered through the National Association of Home Builders, help seniors and individuals with accessibility needs remain safer and more comfortable in the homes they love.

Through Home Safety & Comfort Assessments, home modifications, and ongoing maintenance support, they’re helping families find something invaluable: peace of mind.

And isn’t that what restoration is all about?

Today, Aging in Place North Carolina joined so many beautiful hearts walking in solidarity toward a future without Alzheimer’s. 💜

Every step represented someone we love, someone we miss, and every family navigating the realities of this devastating disease.

The giving does not end when the walk is over.

As we enter a season of generosity, please keep the Alzheimer’s Association in your thoughts and consider making a donation to support its important work. Most of all, keep those living with Alzheimer’s, their caregivers, and their families close to your heart.

Sometimes the smallest modification makes the biggest difference.

Recently, we shared a bathroom safety project that included new flooring, improved doors, secure grab bars, and an upgraded showerhead with a handheld attachment.

When our Founder & CEO, Del Scheitler, called to check in, the family shared how much they loved everything. But Del had one specific question:

“How is the new handheld showerhead working?”

He admitted that he had lost sleep wondering whether its original position might be too high for the homeowner to return it safely to the holder. The family initially thought it would be fine, but less than a week later, they called back.

Because of the wife’s previous fall injury, raising her arm that high was difficult. She could take the handheld down, but she could not comfortably put it back.

When she asked what it would cost to add another holder at a more accessible height, Del immediately told her not to worry about the cost. We had already identified the potential challenge, and we wanted to make it right.

Drilling through the home’s strong tile shower wall required patience and care, but our team installed the additional holder at a height that worked for her.

Her response said everything:

“Well, that is just perfect. You made it so much easier for me.”

That is what aging in place is truly about. It is not simply installing products and completing projects. It is listening, following up, noticing the details, and making sure every solution works for the person who will use it every day.

A home modification is only successful when it makes life safer, easier, and more comfortable. We will always take the extra step to make sure it does.

“Protect the edges.” It’s a simple idea that can make a meaningful difference.

During a recent Home Safety & Comfort Assessment, we met with an 80-year-old woman recovering from heart surgery. She currently uses a walker and cannot lift her arms overhead or carry more than 10 pounds, but her determination to remain independent is as strong as ever.

Her family asked us to assess the home and identify ways to support her recovery, comfort and safety.

One concern we frequently see in older adults’ homes is an accumulation of belongings across countertops, tables and walkways. It can be tempting to attach a label such as “hoarding,” but labels rarely help people feel understood, or ready to make a change.

Our Founder & CEO, Del Scheitler takes a different approach. Drawing from experience helping older adults, including members of his own family, he meets homeowners exactly where they are.

He introduced a principle he calls, "Protect The Edges".

Items stored along the edges of counters and tables can be easily knocked to the floor by someone using a walker or wheelchair. The natural impulse may be to bend down and retrieve the item, increasing the risk of a fall.

Cluttered edges also remove a clear, visible boundary. If someone becomes dizzy or loses balance and instinctively reaches toward a solid surface, their hand may strike a loose object instead of finding the firm edge they expected.

His message was respectful and realistic:

“I’m not going to tell you that everything has to go. I am going to encourage you to think differently about protecting the edges. Move your belongings inward and keep every edge clear.”

We recommended practical storage options, but the most important outcome was agreement: no items would be stored along the edges of flat surfaces going forward.

The homeowner appreciated being offered a manageable solution instead of being blamed for how the situation developed. Her family also learned a kinder, more productive way to support an ongoing conversation that had never reached a resolution.

So remember, Protect the Edges.
