Sometimes construction is about more than wood, hardware and paint. Sometimes, it’s about giving a family one less thing to worry about.

We want to thank our partners at Investment Heroes Roofing for helping us provide newly constructed stair rails for the Nolan family through Ramps & Rails for Seniors, a partnership focused on improving safety and accessibility for older adults in our community.

After learning about the family’s situation, Investment Heroes Roofing Head of Production, Alexi, knew they wanted to help. The homeowner is currently battling Stage 4 cancer, and her family had become increasingly concerned about the stairs leading into her home.

Working alongside our Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists (CAPS), the teams developed a plan to improve the entrance and provide greater stability and support. Investment Heroes Roofing then donated 100% of the labor and materials, while Aging in Place North Carolina donated our time, expertise and safety planning.

What looks like a few new rails is really something much bigger: peace of mind for an entire family.

As the Nolan family continues to pray, support one another and navigate this diagnosis together, worrying about an unsafe entrance should be one less burden they have to carry.

As the Investment Heroes team shared:

“Working with Aging in Place North Carolina has helped our team understand that protecting a home isn’t only about protecting it from storms and the elements. It’s also about helping make sure the people inside can live there safely for years to come. When someone you love is already facing a serious diagnosis, the last thing a family should have to worry about is a preventable fall because the proper support wasn’t there.”

September is Fall Prevention Month, and we’re raising the GOLD STANDARD for what a safer home can look like. 💛

Here’s a number that should get everyone’s attention:

More than 14 MILLION Americans age 65+ report falling every year. That’s about 1 in every 4 older adults. Falls are also the leading cause of injury for adults 65+.

And here at home, the numbers hit even harder. In North Carolina, 1,776 adults age 65+ died from unintentional falls in 2023.

But here’s what we want families to remember most:
Falls can be prevented.

Fall prevention doesn’t have to mean turning the home you love into something clinical. It can mean a beautiful grab bar. Better lighting. A second handrail. Safer flooring. Removing a troublesome threshold. Or identifying a risk you’ve walked past a thousand times.

That’s why this September, Aging in Place North Carolina is changing the conversation about fall prevention.
We believe SAFETY IS THE NEW LUXURY. ✨

A safer home should still feel like your home. Planning ahead may be one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself and the people who love you.

If you’re blessed to have aging loved ones nearby, it’s moments like this that make life so rich.

Grandma on the floor playing with the grandkids. Family gathered around the kitchen table. Holidays, birthdays, Sunday afternoons and those ordinary little moments that eventually become some of our favorite memories.

But aging in place isn’t only about making their home safer.

Floor Sample Saturday!

Sometimes the right flooring choice is about so much more than how it looks.

We’re thrilled to be making final flooring selections for a family whose parents, both in their 90s, want to continue living independently in the home they love.

What began as an inquiry about safer bathroom flooring quickly became a much bigger conversation.

Their children had growing concerns after falls had occurred. Their parents, understandably, wanted to maintain their independence, their routines, and the home they’ve enjoyed for years.

Our job wasn’t to choose one side. It was to find solutions that respected both independence and peace of mind.

After completing a comprehensive Home Safety & Comfort Assessment, we developed a plan that included:

🏡 Properly positioned grab bars
💡 Improved lighting
🚿 Safer, more accessible bathroom accessories
🚪 Door modifications
👣 Flooring with improved traction and comfort underfoot

The flooring presented a unique challenge.

The parents loved their existing stone tile and did not want it removed. At the same time, the family wanted something more forgiving underfoot that could help reduce risk and still be durable enough for walkers and everyday use.

So we kept researching.

After weeks of sourcing options, we found a premium vinyl flooring solution with a cushioned underlayer that provided the combination we were looking for: traction, support, durability, comfort, and beautiful design.

Then our construction team developed an innovative installation approach that allowed us to work with the existing stone flooring rather than immediately tearing it out.

When we presented the final samples, you could almost feel the relief.

That’s what thoughtful aging-in-place design should accomplish.

It isn’t about walking into someone’s home, installing a quick solution, and moving on to the next project.

It’s about listening. Researching. Problem-solving. And sometimes spending weeks figuring out how to check as many boxes as possible for the entire family.

Recently appointed to the Executive Leadership Team of the Alzheimer's Association in Raleigh, Del is proud to bring the Aging in Place North Carolina family together to help make this year's Walk one to remember.

And when we say family, we mean it.

As a proud member of the sandwich generation, Del will walk alongside his wife and young son, his mother, his brother, extended family, friends, customers, and the people who help keep the ones they love safe and supported.

As Del shares:

When you’re going through assessment photos and find a “fit check” of your boss in the mix. 📸

Yes, we take A LOT of photos during a Home Safety & Comfort Assessment.

And apparently, every once in a while, our Founder makes the audit too. 😂

But there’s an important reason behind all that documentation.

Our assessment doesn’t end when we walk out the front door.

We start with a family interview to understand the homeowner’s history, concerns, routines, needs and goals.

Then we complete a real-time walkthrough of the home, identifying potential safety concerns, quick modifications, longer-term solutions and even opportunities to rethink how certain spaces are being used.

But here’s a part of our process families don’t always see:

We go back through every photo and video we captured.

Our team conducts a thorough visual audit after the visit because when you’re walking, talking, listening, taking notes and answering questions, it’s possible to notice something later that deserves a second look.

The height of a frequently used item.

A doorway that may become difficult to navigate.

Those details matter.

There’s a little extra magic on the pickleball court today. 🏓✨

We’re back at NetSports in Morrisville supporting today’s I Love Pickleball North Carolina Tournament, a grassroots pickleball competition group created by Larry Wittenberg.

Larry is a former lawyer who, in his 60s, is living his best life building pickleball challenges, creating tournaments and giving people more reasons to get out, get moving and stay connected.

We met Larry a few months ago at the Senior Games in Raleigh. When he asked if Aging in Place North Carolina would support his tournament, our answer was easy: absolutely.

Because this is what aging well can look like.

Movement. Competition. Community. New friendships. And continuing to do the things you love at every age.

And today came with a fun surprise. Wayne Anderson is the tournament’s official referee!

Our Community & Business Development Director, Jessica Cunningham, immediately knew him as The Amazing Magic of Wayne Anderson, while our Founder & CEO, Del Scheitler, remembered Wayne from his incredible performance at the Jingle Ball.

And in-between refereeing, Wayne wowed everyone in the stands too.

Thank you, Larry, for reminding us that getting older doesn’t mean slowing down. Sometimes it means finding a whole new game to play. ❤️🏓

A big thank you to The Senior Network Vendor Day in Raleigh for bringing together hundreds of families, caregivers and senior care professionals.

Our Community & Business Development Director, Jessica Cunningham, had a wonderful time representing Aging in Place North Carolina, sharing what we do and reconnecting with friends from PR Home Care | Senior Support, SYNERGY HomeCare and Heart to Michael Lucero.

Events like this matter because we get to meet people of all ages, in all different stages of life.

When we start explaining how thoughtful home design, simple modifications and proactive planning can make a home safer and more comfortable, you can almost see the moment it clicks. Eyes get a little wider, and they start looking at their own home differently.

The bathroom. The stairs. The lighting. The front entrance. Even the things they’ve walked past every day without a second thought.

That’s what we want.

Aging in place shouldn’t only be a conversation about what someone needs now. It should also be about creating a home that continues to work for them next.
