The laundry room probably isn't the first space you dream about when planning a custom home.

But you'll use it. A lot.

And a few thoughtful decisions can make laundry day considerably easier:

• Location: Near the bedrooms? Off the mudroom? Somewhere in between?
• Workspace: Would a counter for folding make life easier?
• Storage: Where will detergent, cleaning supplies, baskets, and extra linens go?
• Hanging space: Do you regularly air-dry clothes?
• Traffic: Can someone use the room without blocking a hallway or doorway?

There's no universally perfect laundry room layout. A family with three kids may need something completely different from a couple building their retirement home.

When designing a kitchen, it's easy to focus on cabinets, countertops, appliances, and the island.

But here's another question worth asking:

Where will all the food actually go?

A well-planned pantry can make a surprisingly big difference in how your kitchen functions every day.

Think about:

• How much food your household typically stores
• Whether you buy in bulk
• Small appliances that need a home
• Whether you'd benefit from counter space inside the pantry
• How far the pantry is from where groceries enter the house

A pantry doesn't necessarily need to be huge. It needs to be designed around how you shop, cook, and use your kitchen.

It's one of those details that may not be the star of the floor plan — but you'll appreciate getting it right every single day.

Creating a wish list for a custom home is the easy part.

The really useful exercise is deciding which wishes matter most.

Try separating your ideas into three groups:

Must Have — Features that directly affect how your family needs the home to function.

Would Love — Things that would meaningfully improve the home, but aren't essential.

Could Add Later — Features that don't necessarily need to be part of the initial build.

Why do this before you get too far into planning?

Because when choices inevitably come up, you already know where your priorities are. Instead of treating every feature as equally important, you can put more of your attention and resources toward the things that will make the biggest difference in how you live.

And don't be surprised if you and your spouse have slightly different lists. 😉 That's useful information, too.
