LET'S TALK ABOUT MIXING METALS
For the first post of our LET'S TALK series, we are going to discuss techniques for mixing metals. Something that comes up often while designing a space is mixing metals and how to properly layer fixtures for the best aesthetic. At Rising Sun Construction LLC we encourage our clients to utilize an intentional mix of metal finishes to provide a custom collage of hardware, lighting, and plumbing fixtures throughout their homes. These fixtures, in traditional builder grade home scenarios, are characteristically chosen for ease of simplicity. For example, using a single metal type like oil rubbed bronze throughout the home for door k***s, chandeliers, ceiling fans, and faucets. We will take steps to help our clients avoid making this design mistake, while minimizing decision fatigue. Interior design experts typically recommend that a home incorporate two to three metal finishes in a home construction project or renovation. This keeps the spaces looking balanced, warm, and intentional. Using just a single metal can look flat and uninteresting. Depending on the size of the home, using four or more metal types can look busy and unplanned.
How to Mix Metals:
- Choose one main metal (faucets, overhead lighting, cabinet pulls)
- Keep finishes in mind (mix warm metals like gold and brass with cool ones like chrome and black for balance)
- Spread different finishes in a space to avoid “clumping”
- Add accent metals (door k***s, lamps, photo frames)
Common Use of Metals:
- Polished chrome is classic in bathrooms for a clean look
- Brushed brass or gold adds warmth to a space
- Unlaquered brass is timeless; patina develops overtime
- Matte black basically matches everything
