They say the entrance to the house is the front door. Yeah, ok - but the entrance to the property is the driveway.

After a glance at the house to make sure it's still there (kinda like finding your gate at the airport - doesn't exist until you see it), the driveway is what brings your focus first. So what, right? It's just concrete. Is it though?

I know our adoring fans can't wait for every Tuesday when we post, but I couldn't wait this week. I have to take a moment to brag on my boy.

Everyone, meet Kyle Campbell, our Field Supervisor/Senior Tech for HNL.

I met Kyle when he was just out of the United States Marine Corps and freshly enrolled in the fire academy. I had the, well, experience of helping put him through the academy and leading him into his first controlled-burn house. While in the academy, Kyle started working at Hook N Ladder PW part-time; first as an assistant, then as a wash tech. He worked hard and earned trust. He became a reliable and integral part of the company. We were actually on a wash job when he got the call offering his first career firefighter position. Stoked!

Kyle went on to work at Atlantic Beach Fire Department for years, earned his paramedic, and became Captain Campbell. He has affected the lives of hundreds of people over the years through medicine, water rescues, firefighting, vehicle extrication, and just being his good-natured self.

Now, we at Hook N Ladder have the absolute privilege of having him working full-time and leading the company forward day in and day out. Kyle carries with him a sense of duty to his crew, always gives the extra effort, and sets a high standard - refusing to settle. He keeps work fun, always laughing, and always keeps a cool head. I am extremely humbled to have him with us at Hook N Ladder, and proud to call him my brother.

Keep an eye out for this guy on the streets and in your neighborhoods, pulling his beloved red and black trailer. 'Cause if this guy pulls up to your house, you're in for a treat.

The deck is the pinnacle of the summer backyard domain.

Morning coffee with the sunrise. Late-day grillin’. Warm nights under the lights with friends and family. Decks bring us together and bring us joy.

Unless it looks like this deck. Yuk.

This deck belongs to a friend of ours (she said we could talk trash about it). Friends don’t let friends have bad decks. Luckily, she had us.

We used a specific process to strip all the failing paint down to the wood, then restored the wood underneath. Now it’s awaiting sanding and staining.

If your deck looks terrible too, let us work our magic on it, and you’ll be out there flipping burgers on it in no time. The number’s below; you know the drill.

We love get-togethers! Especially when all the neighbors decide to do something together.

If you're getting your house washed by yours truly (HNL!), give a neighbor a call - and make it a block party. The more the merrier! We give discounts for same-day services in the same neighborhood, coordinated ahead of time, to all partygoers.

HNL Campaign for College: A Mission for Admission

Many times, in life things don’t always go according to plan. Life gives us these ebbs and flows of fortune and tragedy, and while most days don’t have such highs and lows, every once in a while, there’s a moment that stops you in your tracks.

I had a moment like that the other day.

A young woman who worked hard, got into college, and was preparing to start the next chapter of her life unexpectedly lost a significant piece of the funding that was supposed to help get her there. The who and will remain private out of respect for the family, but the larger issue remains: how do we get this kid, who’s done everything right, to academia? I lost sleep over it.

I’m not a rich man, I can’t fix the cost of college. I can’t replace every scholarship dollar that disappears.

I am stubborn and tenacious, though. Problems are only situations that don’t yet have a solution. So, I’d find one.

But we can wash some houses.

This year, Hook N Ladder Power Washing Co. is launching its first ever scholastic fundraising effort:
HNL Campaign for College: A Mission for Admission.

The idea is simple: from August 3 through Labor Day, when you book qualifying exterior-cleaning work with Hook N Ladder, we’ll contribute part of what HNL earns from that job toward helping a student pay for college.

HNL contributes 10% of every qualifying Campaign for College job.
Our goal for the inaugural campaign is $5,000.

And while this year's campaign started because of one young woman's situation, I don't want it to end there.

The Campaign for College will become an annual HNL tradition; with a new student selected each year from a first responder, military, or veteran family, including families who have lost someone in the line of duty or in service to our country.

The mission is straightforward:
You give us work.
We go to work.
Together, we help put a kid through school.

Book by Labor Day and help us make this extraordinary young woman’s dreams come true.

We really do live in a beautiful place. We have green trees, turquoise waters, and bright sand. The scenic views really allow the Crystal Coast to live up to it's name. And if your windows are dirty, you can't see any of that.
