There’s a lot that happens before the first paver ever gets laid.

We broke ground on our latest outdoor living project this week, and the foundation is taking shape.

Excavation is complete, the subgrade has been compacted, the natural gas line is in, and we’ve started building the gravel base that will support everything above it.
It’s not the glamorous part of a patio project—but it’s one of the most important.

A beautiful patio starts below the surface. Proper excavation, compaction, drainage and base preparation are what allow the finished hardscape to perform the way it should for years to come.

Next up: the part you actually get to see.
Hardscape installation begins as we start bringing together the circular paver patio, built-in seating and natural gas fire pit.
We’ll share the transformation as it comes together.

A landscape shouldn't just look good the day we finish it.

The real test comes afterward.

Does it feel good to sit outside with a drink at the end of the day?
Do the plants soften the stone as they mature?
Does the lighting make you want to stay outside after the sun goes down?
Does the path take you naturally where you want to go?

Those are the things I'm thinking about when we build a landscape.

There is certainly craftsmanship involved — the base beneath the patio, the cuts in the stone, drainage, grading, how a wall is built — but those things aren't really the end goal.

The goal is creating a place that becomes part of how you live at home.

That's when I think a landscape is successful.

Some things just feel different when they’re built for the space.

These steps started as a temporary way to get from the house to the patio. They worked—but they never really belonged there.

The new steps were designed specifically for this home, this patio, and the way the family moves through the space.

And that changes more than how they look.

They feel different underfoot. They function differently because the rise, depth and transitions were intentionally worked out.

And visually, they make the patio feel like it was always meant to be part of the home.

There’s a lot of craft hidden in something that looks this simple—layout, elevations, base preparation, cuts, block placement, caps, and tying everything cleanly into the existing home and patio.

Custom masonry is an investment.

But these are steps this family will walk across thousands of times.

When something is used every day, we believe it’s worth building it thoughtfully, building it well, and building it to last.

A backyard doesn’t have to just be the space behind your house.

It can become the place you retreat to at the end of the day. A place to sit by the water, enjoy the trees, gather with family, or simply slow down for a while.

This Monument backyard started as a pretty ordinary patch of lawn. We transformed it into an outdoor living space built around a natural water feature, paver patio, stonework, and the surrounding landscape.

The goal wasn’t just to make the yard look better.
It was to create a place that feels good to come home to.

Labor Day feels a little different when you build things for a living.

Bare Root is a small company, and behind it are real people and families.

I’m grateful for the guys who work alongside me, for the families who trust us with their homes, and for the work we're fortunate enough to do.

Good landscape construction is demanding work. I'm proud of what we build, but even more grateful for the people who make it possible.

From an unusable yard to a place designed for living.

When we first looked at this property, the front and backyard weren't giving the homeowners much reason to spend time outside.

Rather than simply replacing what was there, we approached it as a complete landscape renovation — creating a welcoming entrance in the front and a comfortable, inviting outdoor living space in the backyard.

The finished landscape brings together multiple paver patios and walkways, synthetic turf, new plantings, landscape lighting and irrigation into one cohesive design.

Now comes our favorite part: watching the landscape grow, mature and become part of the family's life.

This photo doesn't show the things that make this outdoor living space last for years, years to come.

We used a bulletproof base system
Held together hybrid edging to work with our

Our pavers built with intention and detail provides a solid surface for our client to enjoy.

Then, to tackle elevation changes, we used from Canyon City Colorado, to provide reliable and rugged walls and steps.

To finish it off, the greenery for the scenery is givig this new home a secluded feel right from the beginning.

Phase two still loading, steps and lower patio still to come.
