It's the first Saturday in September and garden chores are shifting to help ensure a bountiful harvest when the season comes to an end.

Still have a lot of green tomatoes on the vine? Pinch off any new blossoms, we're far enough into the season that new fruit won't have enough time to produce larger tomatoes. You may have another week or so before doing this with your cherry tomatoes. πŸ…

After everything I harvested yesterday... I had to grab a basket for everything I picked while watering this evening. My shorts didn't have any pockets. 🀣

Busy weekend in the garden doing all the things including harvesting most of the basil for pesto and the first few purple tomatillos, peppers and onions for salsa.
I've grown lots of purple veggies this season for bitter sweet reasons. πŸ’œπŸ₯ΉπŸ₯ΊπŸ’œπŸ‘Ό

How are everyone's tomato plants looking? Most of mine are doing great! Producing tons of fruit and thriving. However, here in Pickle Park we're not immune to the Beet Curly Top virus that's going around. It's transmitted by the Beet Leafhopper. They inject the virus while they feed on your plants. Other plants that are susceptible to the virus are beets, spinach, peppers and legumes.

Signs of the virus can be seen on the video but listed below.

⚠️ Leaves curling up - pale and yellowing color
⚠️ Leathery and almost brittle leaf texture
⚠️ Uncharacteristic purple veining
⚠️ Stunted growth and fruit production

βœ… Remove the entire plant. Roots and all.
βœ… Bag it and toss it. DON'T COMPOST IT or feed it to your animals.
βœ… Fruit is still edible. Harvest, wash and ripen in a sunny window.

It's safe to plant a fall crop in its place. The virus doesn't remain in the soil. πŸ’š
