Episode 7 – "The Offer"

The office was silent.
Justin stared at the folder.

Jennifer hadn't said another word.
She simply nodded.
"Open it."

Justin slowly lifted the cover.
His eyes scanned the first page.
Then the second.
Then he stopped.

He looked back at Jennifer.
"You've got to be kidding."

Jennifer smiled.
"I've read it three times."

Justin leaned back in his chair.
For the first time in years...
He didn't know what to say.

Outside...

The crew was finishing for the day.
Jayhli was washing down one of the trucks.
Jordan was putting away climbing gear.
Jagger was sweeping the shop floor.
Just another evening at J AND J.
They had no idea...
Everything was about to change.

Jennifer finally broke the silence.
"They want us."

Justin looked up.
"Not just for one job."

Jennifer nodded.
"No."
"They're asking us to become their primary tree contractor."

Justin stared at the paperwork again.
The contract would keep every truck busy.
It would mean hiring more people.
More equipment.
Longer hours.
A bigger future.

But it also meant something else.
Responsibility.

Justin stood up and walked to the office window.
Outside, he watched his family.
Three kids.
Three different dreams.
One family business.

Jennifer quietly asked...
"What are you thinking?"

Justin smiled.
"I'm thinking..."
"...this company isn't just mine anymore."

He looked toward the yard.
Jordan was showing the new employee how to secure a chainsaw.
Jayhli was helping Jennifer finish paperwork before heading home.
Jagger proudly swept the last pile of sawdust into a dustpan.

Justin laughed softly.
"I've been so busy building J AND J..."
"...I almost missed who I've been building it for."

Jennifer reached for his hand.
"We don't have to answer tonight."

Justin nodded.
"No."

He closed the folder.
"Tomorrow..."
"...we'll tell the family."

Justin walks outside.
The sun is setting.
Golden light fills the yard.
The trucks sit lined up.
Mud still on the tires.
Chainsaws cooling.

The familiar wooden sign reads:
J AND J CUSTOM TREE SERVICE

Justin looks at it.
Smiles.
Then turns toward his family.

Before he can say a word...
A pickup truck slowly pulls into the yard.
Nobody recognizes it.
The driver steps out.
A man in a suit.
He removes his sunglasses.
Looks directly at Justin.
Then says...
"Mr. Talley?"

Justin nods.
"Yes?"

The man smiles.
"I'm afraid the paperwork Jennifer received yesterday... isn't the whole story."

Silence.

Jennifer's smile disappears.
Justin's expression hardens.

The stranger continues...

The forecast has shifted west since yesterday, so Southeast Texas is seeing more of Bertha's impacts than initially expected.

Here's the latest:

Current intensity: Tropical Storm Bertha has 45 mph sustained winds and is weakening gradually as it moves inland. It never strengthened into a hurricane.
Location: Bertha has made another landfall near the Texas–Louisiana border and is moving west across the upper Texas coast.
Warnings: A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect from parts of Louisiana west to Sargent, Texas, including Galveston Bay.

For the Houston/Galveston area:

Expect a 12-hour period of tropical weather with bands of rain and gusty winds through today into tonight.
Wind gusts could reach 40–45 mph, especially closer to the coast.
Rainfall is expected to be spotty rather than widespread, although isolated heavier downpours could produce localized street flooding.
Along the coast, expect rough surf, dangerous rip currents, and minor coastal flooding around high tide.

Be proactive! Don't wait until its too late to take care of hazardous trees or low hanging limbs.
