I was the 4th person to look at this intermittent tripping issue with a new carrier system..2 trips from the HVAC installer and 1 trip from the “electrician “ they recommended. Neither of which bothered to properly troubleshoot the issue. The AC contractor reset the breaker each time and after the second time , recommended the electrician come check. The outdoor condenser unit had a max fuse of 20 A, and a minimum circuit ampacity of 14 a. The “electrician” installed a 30 amp breaker to “fix“ the problem. after it tripped again, the homeowner who I had worked for in the past ,reached out to me for help. I literally was there 20 minutes before finding the white wire, B phase was pressed hard against the bare , grounded conductor in the AC disconnect. Neither one of these companies recommended replacing the heavily corroded disconnect either..smh , For Those who don’t know, electricity is produced at 60 cycles per second,( Hz) those cycles , create a vibration , that grounded conductor is rough and oxidized and overtime, The vibration and contact between them wore through the insulation on the conductor, causing a short circuit to ground. It was intermittent in nature and would reset and without someone actually looking for the problem and caring about the customer, who knows how long this would have gone ..
If you’re a homeowner make sure whoever you have working for you is licensed and cares about the quality of the job they are there to provide. If you’re an electrical contractor or a tradesmen in general , in any of the certified trades you need to do better.! treat each customers service call, the way you would want yours to be treated!!
