With tropical weather approaching the Upper Texas Coast, generator advertisements are popping up everywhere. Unfortunately, not everyone advertising generator installation is licensed to perform electrical work in Texas.
In Texas, electrical contracting work must be performed through a properly licensed electrical contractor. TDLR also requires electrical contractor advertisements to include the contractor’s name and license number. For an Electrical Contractor, that number is identified as a TECL number.
Before you hire someone, ask: “What is your TECL number?”
If someone is advertising electrical generator installation and you can’t find a TECL number on the advertisement, that should be a major red flag. You can verify an electrical contractor's license information at tdlr.texas.gov/licensesearch.
Generator installation involves your home’s electrical system. Improperly installed transfer equipment, generator inlets, interlocks, or wiring can create serious risks to your home, your family, and even utility workers.
Unlicensed electrical work isn’t just against Texas licensing requirements, it can be dangerous.
