What is a GFCI receptacle, and why is it important?

You’ve probably seen outlets in your home with TEST and RESET buttons on the front. These are called GFCI receptacles — Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters.

🔌 WHAT DOES A GFCI DO?

A GFCI is designed to help protect people from electric shock.

It constantly monitors the electrical current flowing through the circuit. If it detects current leaking somewhere it shouldn’t — potentially through a person — the GFCI can shut the power off extremely quickly.

That’s why GFCI protection is especially important around water and damp locations.

🏠 WHERE WILL YOU FIND GFCI PROTECTION IN A HOME?

Depending on the home's age and applicable electrical code, GFCI protection is commonly found in areas such as:

• Bathrooms 🚿
• Kitchens 🍳
• Garages 🚗
• Basements
• Laundry areas
• Outdoor receptacles 🌧️
• Crawl spaces
• Around sinks and other wet locations
• Certain appliances and equipment

⚠️ ONE GFCI MAY PROTECT SEVERAL OUTLETS

Here's something many homeowners don't realize:

If an outlet suddenly stops working, the problem might not be that outlet.

A single GFCI receptacle can provide protection to additional receptacles downstream on the same circuit.

So if you lose power to an outlet in your garage, bathroom, basement, kitchen, or outside, look around for a tripped GFCI and press the RESET button.

🔴 WHAT IF THE GFCI WON'T RESET?

Don't keep forcing it.

A GFCI that won't reset could indicate:

• A ground fault
• Moisture in an outlet or electrical box
• A damaged appliance
• A wiring problem
• A failed GFCI device
• Loss of power feeding the GFCI

That's when it's time to have the circuit checked by a qualified electrician.

🧪 DON'T FORGET TO TEST YOUR GFCIs

Use the TEST button periodically to make sure the device trips properly, then press RESET to restore power. Follow the device manufacturer's testing instructions.

GFCIs are small devices that provide an important layer of protection for you and your family.
