It’s always a good time to create and plant a garden in southern California. And sure, be bold - grow food in your front yard!⁣
We meet a lot of neighbors during installs and they’re all excited to see the seedlings grow and produce. ⁣
So meet your neighbors and grow community along with your vegetables. ⁣
Inspire others to get their own gardens growing.⁣

And, no we didn’t leave out the CA natives. There’s a 7’x2’ back bed seeded with CA native flowers to attract pollinators:⁣
yarrows, lupines, poppies, sunflowers, clarkias, and gilias. The more pollinators, the more productive your food crops. ⁣

An early summer revisit to a March planting. Apricot mallows have continued to grow and flower through all that this summer’s climate has thrown at them. Remarkable resilience.

Been awhile between postings…a busy summer! And, yes, you can plant natives in summer as long as you’re mindful of their needs during establishment within the various microclimates of So Cal.⁣

Long ago, this property was once a lake bed. Clay is one thing. Expansive clay soil is another.⁣
It’s defined as “soils that have undergone significant volume change with the addition or⁣
removal of water.” When the soil absorbs water, the volume of the soil increases. I’d say a former lake bed would be a “significant volume change.” ⁣

We amended with a soil conditioner,⁣
perlite, and additional conditioning soil around the roots of the natives.⁣

So far, so good…looking forward to seeing this landscape fill in, create habitat, and year-round⁣
interest.⁣

There’s nothing as satisfying as killing your lawn and growing CA natives. And the best time to start is fall in So Cal. ⁣
