San Gabriel Valley koi keepers: when fall leaves start dropping around your pond, skim them before they sink. A few leaves usually aren’t a problem, but heavier buildup can decay, add sludge, affect water quality, and clog filters. Check the skimmer basket after windy days and remove decaying leaves you spot at the bottom. Do trees overhang your pond?

Healthy koi start with healthy water. Clean, oxygen-rich water and suitable filtration help support a thriving pond. Regular water checks and filter care can help you stay on top of changing conditions. What’s your go-to koi pond water-care tip?

Koi think about food all day, please remember not to over feed them.

Protect your precious koi! 🦅 A shallow pond might look great, but it leaves your fish vulnerable to predators like herons and other large birds. Make sure your pond has enough depth and plenty of hiding spots to keep your aquatic pets safe. 🐟💧

# # What’s Really on Your Koi’s Mind? 🧠🐟
If koi fish had a superpower, it would be convincing you that they haven’t eaten in a week.
As you can see in our latest video, if you could peek inside a koi’s thoughts, it’s pretty much an endless loop of floating food pellets and the wonderful human who brings them. They are professional beggars, and they are *very* good at their jobs.
But as tempting as it is to throw in another handful every time they swim up to greet you, overfeeding is one of the easiest ways to disrupt your ecosystem pond.
# # # Why "Less is More" When It Comes to Feeding
* **Water Quality Woes:** Whatever goes in must come out. Overfeeding leads to excess fish waste and uneaten pellets breaking down in the water. This fuels unwanted algae blooms and strains your biological filtration.
* **Fish Health:** Just like us, koi can suffer from health issues if they overeat. Plus, high ammonia or nitrate levels from excess waste can stress their immune systems.
* **The 5-Minute Rule:** Only feed your koi what they can completely consume within about three to five minutes. If there are pellets floating around after that, it’s time to scoop them out and scale back next time.
Your koi might *think* about food all day long, but keeping them on a healthy schedule ensures their water stays crystal clear and they stay vibrant for years to come.
