Feels like fall out there this week. Mornings in the 50s, highs holding in the low-to-mid 70s. That kind of cool snap is great for landscaping: plants establish roots without fighting summer heat, and crews get more done without the sun wearing them down.

One catch: this has been one of the wettest Augusts on record in Western PA (by some measures the 5th wettest on the books), so the ground is still saturated underneath that cool air. Heavy equipment on waterlogged soil means compaction and rutting, so give low spots a few extra days to drain.

If you’ve ever visited us in person, most likely you were greeted by this handsome guy at the window. We want to wish our best bud Captain a very happy 5th birthday! We hope your weekend is filled with lots of belly rubs!

After all this rain, your mulch needs some attention.

Western PA has seen weeks of heavy rain this summer, and if your beds are showing it, you're not alone. All that water packs mulch down into a dense, matted layer. Once that happens, it stops doing its job. Instead of soaking in water and air, it starts shedding water right off the top, and trapped moisture underneath can lead to mold and fungal problems.

The fix is simple: fluff it. Take a rake and turn the top layer of mulch to break up the compacted clumps. This restores airflow, lets water and oxygen reach the soil again, and helps everything underneath dry out evenly. Just make sure the mulch has dried out a bit first. Fluffing soaking wet mulch will just re-compact it.

Late summer into early fall is also a great time to add a fresh layer if yours has thinned out. A properly maintained mulch bed helps regulate soil temperature, holds in moisture, suppresses weeds, and gives your plants' roots a better environment heading into fall and winter.

Need to refresh your mulch or top off your beds? We've got you covered.

Western PA has been underwater for weeks straight, and if your yard or field has turned into a swamp, you're not imagining it. Standing water doesn't fix itself.

HydroBlox is built for exactly this problem. It moves water fast: 14.25 gallons per 40 inches per minute. Instead of pooling on the surface, water actually drains where it needs to go.

Late summer into fall is one of the best times to plant, and PittMoss is a great way to set your soil up for success. PittMoss is a recycled paper growing medium that you mix right into your existing soil (1 part PittMoss to 2 parts soil, or 1:1 for tougher conditions).

Here's why it works: PittMoss's engineered fibers create the ideal environment for root development, with the perfect balance of aeration and water absorption, plus a rich carbon source for mycorrhizae. That combination of air space, water reserves, and available carbon means exceptional root growth, plus thriving microbes that support the plant even further.

That means stronger roots before winter sets in, and come spring, bigger blooms with less watering and fertilizing.

We carry two types, both in 4 cubic foot bags: 🌸 Performance: fortified with a controlled release fertilizer πŸ₯• Plentiful: certified organic, great for fall vegetable and garlic beds

Stop by and stock up before your fall planting weekend!
