🛑 𝟏. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 "𝟐𝟎-𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐭 𝐑𝐮𝐥𝐞" (𝐍𝐨𝐧-𝐍𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞)

Never run a generator inside, in a garage, or in a basement—even with the door open.

• 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿: Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a silent, odorless killer that can fill a home in minutes.

• 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝘅: Place the generator at least 20 feet away from your house. Ensure the exhaust points away from all windows, doors, and vents.

⛽ 𝟐. 𝐋𝐞𝐭 𝐈𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐅𝐮𝐞𝐥

Never top off the tank while the generator is running.

• 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿: Generators get extremely hot. A single spill of gasoline on a hot engine part can ignite instantly.

• 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝘅: Turn the generator off and let it cool for at least 2–5 minutes before refueling.

🔌 𝟑. 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞 "𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝"

Never try to power your house by plugging a generator into a standard wall outlet.

• 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿: This sends electricity back into the neighborhood power lines, which can electrocute utility workers or fry your home’s internal wiring.

• 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝘅: Use heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords to plug appliances directly into the generator. For permanent power, only use a professionally installed Transfer Switch.

🌨️ 𝟒. 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐈𝐭 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐫𝐲

Never operate a generator in standing water or falling sleet.

• 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿: Electricity and melting snow do not mix; moisture can cause electrocution or short out the unit.

• 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝘅: Use a "generator tent" or a well-ventilated, covered structure. Keep the unit on a level, elevated surface away from puddles.

💡 𝐏𝐫𝐨-𝐓𝐢𝐩: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 "𝐃𝐫𝐲 𝐑𝐮𝐧"

Do this today before the storm hits:

• 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝘂𝗽: Let the generator run for 15 minutes to ensure it’s operational.

• 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗙𝗹𝘂𝗶𝗱𝘀: Verify that battery and oil levels are sufficient.

• 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵 𝗙𝘂𝗲𝗹: Use fuel that is less than 6 months old to avoid clogging the engine.
