One thing we'd fix: nail pops. Those little round bumps running along a shingle line are nails backing themselves out as the deck moves. Water gets in around the head. It's usually a repair and not a replacement, and it's the kind of thing we'd rather catch now than in February.

🌧️ Your Roof May Have More to Tell You After a Storm
Strong winds and heavy rain can put a roof to the test. And sometimes, storm-related damage isn't immediately obvious from the ground.

After severe weather, keep an eye out for:
πŸ”Ž Shingles that appear missing or displaced.
🏠 Debris or fallen branches on the roof.
πŸ’§ New water stains on ceilings or walls.
🌧️ Signs of water entering the attic or living space.
🏑 Gutters or other exterior components that appear loose or damaged.

Please don't climb onto your roof or use a ladder to investigate. If you suspect damage, a professional assessment is the safer next step.

If water is entering your home, document what you can safely see and contact your insurance company. Address urgent safety concerns first.
A storm may pass quickly, but understanding its impact on your roof can help you decide what to do next.

"It's just a small leak." We've heard that on jobs that ended in a full deck replacement, and on jobs that took twenty minutes and a tube of sealant. You really can't tell from the size of the stain. Somebody has to get up there and look.

🌧️ Follow the Water

Rainwater has a job to do: move off your roof and away from your home.
But what happens when it doesn't?

This weekend, take a few minutes to observe your home's drainage after a rain stormβ€”without climbing onto the roof or ladder.

β˜‘οΈ Does water flow through your downspouts?
β˜‘οΈ Do you notice water spilling over the gutters?
β˜‘οΈ Are there areas where water collects close to your home's foundation?
β˜‘οΈ Do you see loose or sagging gutter sections from the ground?

These observations can help you identify questions worth asking before a small drainage concern becomes a bigger headache.

Remember, your roofing system is about more than shingles. Proper drainage plays an important role, too!

A gutter packed with leaves holds water right against your fascia and backs it up under the first row of shingles. You won't see any of that from the ground. Clear them before the fall rain picks up, and if climbing isn't your thing, we'll take a look while we're out.

πŸ‚ Here's why gutters are part of your roof system.
A gutter isn't just there to make the house look finished.

Its job is to move roof water away from the home.
When gutters or downspouts become clogged, loose, or misaligned, water can overflow where you don't want it β€” potentially affecting fascia, siding, landscaping, and areas around the foundation.

And October is when this becomes especially important in Georgia as leaves begin accumulating. Current fall maintenance guidance is emphasizing gutters, downspouts, and roof drainage as seasonal priorities.

So when you're looking at your roof this fall, think beyond the shingles:

Roof β†’ gutter β†’ downspout β†’ away from the house.

That's the whole water-management path!

Monroe, here's why three quotes on the same house can come back thousands apart. Roofers don't price by the square foot. They price by the square, which is a 100 square foot section of roof. Pitch, layers and what's under the shingles move the number too. Ask any roofer to show you the squares. We'll show you ours.

πŸ‚ Before you climb a ladder, look from the ground.
You don't have to get on your roof to start paying attention to it.

From the ground, look for things such as:
πŸ”Ž Missing or visibly damaged shingles
πŸ”Ž Sagging areas
πŸ”Ž Damaged or separated gutters
πŸ”Ž Debris collecting on the roof
πŸ”Ž Anything that looks noticeably different from the rest of the roof

And remember: a roof can have issues you can't see from the ground.
If something catches your attention, that's a good reason to have it professionally evaluated rather than guessing at what you're seeing.

A few minutes of observation can help you know what questions to ask.

Here is what day one of a roof replacement actually looks like, because almost nobody tells you before you sign. The crew shows up in the morning. Tarps and plywood go down over the landscaping, the AC unit and the driveway before a single shingle moves. Tear off starts on the side away from your front door. It is loud, it is dusty for a few hours, and yes, there will be a dumpster in your driveway. Most single family homes wrap the same day. Asking questions before you commit costs nothing.

πŸ”Ž One roof detail homeowners often overlook: flashing

When people look at a roof, they usually notice the shingles first.
But flashing is another important part of the roof system.

Flashing helps direct water away from areas where the roof meets other structures β€” such as:
β€’ Chimneys
β€’ Roof valleys
β€’ Skylights
β€’ Plumbing penetrations
β€’ Walls and other roof intersections

Georgia's fall maintenance guidance specifically recommends checking flashing as part of a seasonal roof evaluation.

So when you're looking at your roof this fall, don't just ask:
β€œDo my shingles look okay?”
Ask:
β€œWhat is happening around the places where my roof meets something else?”

Those details matter.
