Crane removals in a sleet-storm. Trying to catch a window of manageable wind and firm ground, mostly succeeding. Cool hand Mike on the controls, making it possible . And the best ground crew ever Audge and Claire dealing with 6k picks coming at them all day. Doing what we can do that needs to get done here in the graceless twilight of us empire.

IG's going to bury this one deep. Shout out if you see this.

LD 2266 is a bill being voted on this week by the Maine legislature to repeal coastal sand dune protections. These protections are an obstacle to the intended industrial development of Sears Island/Wahsumkik as a deep water port for offshore wind energy.

Sears Island is the largest undeveloped, uninhabited island remaining on the east coast. It lies immediately across the harbor from the Mack Point shipping terminal, Maine's second largest seaport, which is already in-use recieving large components for land-based wind energy. Mack Point already has road, rail, power, water, and sewer infrastructure that the offshore wind facility build would require, and is receptive to the expansion.

This does not need to be a choice between conserving Sears Island vs industry/jobs/renewable energy so stay out of my comments with that old dirge.

Let your district rep know you're watching how they vote on this and come to the state house in Augusta tomorrow if you can. Now is the time to be visible and vocal.

Yes, we very much work through winter conditions, storms, thawing muddy ground conditions, and adversity in general.

Licensed since 2005, working with 2 awesome employees covered under workman's comp and liability insurance. Please ask us for proof of insurance, and ask your hired contractors in general.

You and your property are at risk without proper coverage of contractors, including their employees and subcontractors! This is inherently risky work.

Contact us -before- it's laying across the roof or powerlines, we'll provide an assessment and come up with a plan.

We added a new pile of ground protection mats that are extending our reach across fragile ground with the mini-skid for removing heavy material without destroying the ground.

This 80- something foot hemlock broke in the December windstorm (there were no external signs of decay), and was caught by a neighboring canopy. The broken end was hanging by threads, about to come loose and fall through the roof under it. We got to do some fun rigging to secure and lower it out, it was the second job for the new bucket truck.

After about 19 years climbing as a licensed arborist, I have finally succumbed to owning and operating a bucket truck this winter. It's a short-wheelbase, tail-mounted 70' altec elevator lift, inspected and manufacturer certified. It's pretty nimble for a 33000 lb vehicle, we can crawl around on the ground-protection mats where conditions aren't too soft. I'm still amazed at the things it can reach.
I'm grateful to have been able to take this step, we'll do a better job & quicker where access allows, safely work near power lines, and save my knees and shoulders for all the trees that need to be climbed. Which is still most of them.

Today's removal of a many, many-stemmed center-less decaying red maple over the house roof(s), house wires, etc. In the wind. And the rain. It's impressive how little sound fiber can hold up long, heavy, almost-horizontal tree stems. Thanks Ken for gutting it out with us on the open station through the bad weather that turned mild the moment we packed up the crane.

..It's a land of contrasts. Let's leave it at that. As I kick back in my favorite chair with a 1911 in each fist. I'm not wound up, why do you ask?

But seriously, look at these weapons. Finding some old guywires down in the thicket with the brushhog. Bringing cutting torches on one of the trucks next time.

Thanks for the skilled photography on this job back in the fall. It's great to have some shots of us cranking through the work. I can barely remember to take some smudgy before or after shots on the phone, usually not both.

More of the woodchip-highway building into a site in Hope. Chipping and felling all day into the narrow access which was our only work area kept us on our toes and vigilant, but that's what we do. Keep your head on a swivel, look up (and down), clearly state what you're doing on the coms, double check you were heard, and keep the mic in your mouth. SING IT OUT. TEN-4. COPY THAT.

Here we are in Hope, cutting and chipping our way into a new building lot access across thawing ground. Ground mats and heavy woodchip layers kept us out of the mud.
