World Mental Health Day. This is a trade that runs on long days and short winters, and looking out for the people on your crew matters as much as looking out for the work. If today is a hard one for you, talk to somebody. A check-in with a friend, a family member, or a professional is worth more than toughing it out alone.

Concrete cracks. We tell every homeowner that up front, because we would rather be honest than have you surprised a year later. What a good crew controls is where. Those lines cut into a driveway are not decoration, they are a planned place for the slab to relieve stress along a straight line. No joints, or joints in the wrong place, is how you get the ugly cracks that wander.

Here is a check you can do yourself this weekend. Throw a cup of water on your driveway or patio. If it beads up and sits there, your sealer is still doing its job. If it soaks straight in and the concrete goes dark, you are due to reseal. Stamped and colored work needs it more often, because the sealer is protecting the color too.

Concrete does not soak up water, it sheds it. So the day a new slab goes in, you have changed where all the rain on that part of your property goes. Rule one, water moves away from the house, never toward a foundation or crawl space. Rule two, it needs somewhere to go once it leaves the slab. We plan that before we pour, not after. Free in-person estimate.

Reinforcement does not stop concrete from cracking. Concrete moves, and it is going to do what it does. What rebar and fiber do is hold the slab together through that movement, so a crack stays tight and both sides stay level instead of separating and lifting. Placement matters too. Rebar lying flat on the dirt does almost nothing. Ask your contractor about it before the pour, because you cannot check it after.

The question we hear most is can you just fix it. Sometimes the answer is yes. But most of the time a driveway cracks or sinks because of what is underneath it, and patching the top does not touch the reason it failed. It cracks again, and you have paid twice. When we replace, we prepare the whole base and put rebar and fiber in the new slab. We will tell you honestly which one your concrete needs.

First day of fall in the Sky Valley. This is one of the better stretches of the year to pour in western Washington. The ground is still workable, the heat is gone, and a slab placed now has time to cure before winter sets in. If a cracked driveway or a tired patio has been on your list all summer, now is a good time to get it looked at.

Washington is wet most of the year, and that changes which finish belongs on your driveway. Exposed aggregate looks great, but it gets slick over time in this climate. Broom finish leaves fine lines across the surface that give you traction when it rains, so kids and older family members are not slipping on the way to the front door. Safety first, looks second. Ask us which finish fits your project.

People look at a finished driveway and think the concrete is the job. It is not. The job is what is underneath it. We excavate to depth, get the ground uniform, and compact it solid all the way across, because uneven ground makes a slab move at different rates and crack right at the transition. That work is invisible when the job is done, which is exactly why it gets skipped. If you want it done right the first time, give us a call. We’ll come take a look.
