Pulled this ridge vent off a roof today. Look underneath it. No opening cut, just solid wood. Zero exhaust. That vent was decoration.
Your attic has to breathe, and it takes TWO things working together:
INTAKE down low, usually your soffit vents under the eaves. That is cool air coming in.
EXHAUST up high, usually your ridge vent. That is hot, moist air getting out.
You need both. Intake with no exhaust barely moves air, and exhaust with no intake is just as bad.
Quick 2 minute check you can do yourself:
1. Walk around and look under your eaves. See those soffit vents? Make sure they are not painted shut or blocked.
2. Look at your roof peak. Ridge vent up there? Good, that is your exhaust.
And going into winter, please do not cover your vents up. I see it every year. Blocked vents trap moisture in the attic, and trapped moisture turns into mold and mildew. Your roof needs to breathe in the winter just like the summer.
We do free ventilation inspections. If you are not sure what you have up there, call or text 318-878-7663 and we will come take a look.
