Cultivating Cultivars – The How & Why of Urban Tree Cultivar Development
How do we grow a tree from seed to city? It takes many hands and a decade or more to grow landscape-ready trees, and even longer to develop, select, trial, and introduce improved cultivars. New tree development is a multi-generational effort that may take 15–30 years. Timelines for developing some top performers for your region will be shared. A changing climate adds urgency to the search for tough, resilient, adaptable urban trees. Understanding the timeline and process of new tree introduction helps us choose, plant and grow the best trees for the future urban forest.
