Finished up this custom built-in desk today!

Every part of this project was built specifically for this space. The desktop was stained to match the existing hardwood flooring, and the base was color matched to the room’s trim for a seamless, built-in look.

I also incorporated a removable center panel to conceal cords and keep everything clean and organized, while all of the drawers are equipped with soft close undermount slides for smooth, quiet operation.

Projects like this are some of the most challenging because there isn’t any room for error. Fitting a piece precisely between three walls without damaging the existing paint or drywall during installation takes careful planning and precise measurements.

Thankfully, this one slid into place perfectly on the very first try.

This afternoon I was able to get this vent hood delivered and installed. It is made from Hickory with a natural finish to match the existing cabinets. It took a little while and some trial and error to get all of the angles to come together nicely but in the end it turned out really well.

Part of this bookcase project involves relocating a couple of electrical outlets. Since the bookcase will cover two existing outlets, I will be moving them to the front of the unit in the baseboard.

The tricky part is that code requires the original junction boxes to remain accessible, even if they’re no longer in use. To solve that, I designed the lower back section of the bookcase to be removable.

All of the backs were cut from the same sheet so the grain flows continuously, and the removable section is split into two pieces with a small ribbon pull for easy access. They’re held in place with rare earth magnets, with stainless steel strips added to the back to give the magnets something solid to grab onto.

It’s one of those details that will probably never be seen or used but it’s still worth doing right.

Made some solid progress on this custom bookshelf project this week.

This set is being built to match a unit I completed for this client last year. It’s all maple and will be finished with a rich brown stain.

The main construction is just about wrapped up, next step is all the trim. I’ll be custom making the baseboards, shoe molding, and crown to tie everything together.

We’re also running electrical to the front of the shelves (hidden in the base), which will make them a lot more functional without sacrificing the clean look.

More updates coming soon.

Another project crossed off my list!

These matching nightstands were built to match the clients existing cabinetry and paint in their home. Beyond just painting these were finished with a clear coat to help increase the durability. Each drawer has soft close slides and are made from high quality pre-finished birch plywood. These should hold up to daily use for years to come.

Just wrapped up this White Oak coffee table.

Simple design on the surface, but a lot of thought went into every detail.

The legs are made from rift-sawn oak so the grain stays consistent no matter which angle you’re looking from. The bottom shelf is mounted with custom brackets to create a clean “floating” look between the legs.

Finished with a custom Sherwin-Williams stain and protected with multiple coats of a water-based topcoat for durability and a smooth feel.
