I keep seeing garden forums telling folks to shake their saved milkweed seeds in a bag of pennies to strip off the white fluff. Honestly, it’s madness. Nature doesn't scrub her seeds clean, and neither should we. That little bit of silk actually makes a perfect handle for planting. If you want to bring the Monarchs back to the garden next summer, mostly you just need to get out of the plant's way. But if you *are* collecting those cracking brown pods this autumn, there is exactly one rather bizarre step you actually do need to take before spring if you want them to survive. And oddly enough, it involves clearing a little space in your kitchen fridge. Skip this, and you won't see a single flower. I've put the full explanation down in the comments.
