Quercus Ridge Farm I‘be been hybridizing hostas for the past several years. This is the journey in my gardens.

I love that UW Extension does these posts. Learning my bugs by bits. ❤️

Not a paid endorsement. I just want to share my delight with an American-made product, the GreenStalk. I have had great luck growing in this and am up to five of them. This is my first year with my GreenStalks, so it has been a year of trying different vegetables in them. I'm currently growing veggie like potatoes, peppers, onions, beans, peas, lettuce, carrots, radishes, and so much more. It's been a fun experiment so far.

The GreenStalks are very well made and come with a 5-year guarantee. The one in the photo has the optional spinner base (without wheels) and lid for the water reservoir on top (to keep the cats out.)

For any of you budding hybridizers...just because a pod doesn't form doesn't mean you failed. Don't stop trying.

The photo below is from an open -pollinated section of a scape. You can clearly see that the bees didn't give up.

Be the bee.

Tomorrow, they go back in the ground.

I sometimes get questions from new seed growers who are concerned that their plants are still small or stopped growing. The plant could be just working on its roots instead of its leaves.

Just like plants, sometimes we humans aren’t done growing into our best selves. We are just working on what doesn’t show.

What happens when you are sweeping up the spilled potting soil in the grow room and some of the spilled catnip gets mixed in?

To cull or not to cull…it’s the hardest part for me of growing hostas from seed.

This one is a cross between H. Sunset Grooves and H. Giantland Twizzler. I find it oddly appealing. Upright thick leaves in dark, satin green. Very prolific grower—it already sent up three side shoots. Soon, I’ll be able to see the bloom color.

Will it make the final cut …

“When do you know your hostas are ready to put on the next-sized container?”

That’s a common question. I let the roots tell me it’s time. This is a 128-cell insert. Many of these are big enough to get transplanted into 50-cell inserts. Look at all those healthy fuzzy roots!
