It's Fire Prevention Week, so here's the plumber's version.

Go take a look at your gas water heater. Garage, closet, wherever it lives.

Now look at what's sitting next to it.

Paint cans. The gas can for the mower. A stack of cardboard boxes. A pile of laundry. We see all of it.

A gas water heater has a flame at the bottom. Fumes from gasoline, paint thinner and some cleaners are heavier than air, so they settle along the floor. Right where that flame is.

Three easy fixes:

Move anything flammable out of that space.

Keep a clear area around the heater so it can breathe.

If you ever smell gas, don't flip switches or go looking for the leak. Get everybody out, then call your gas company or 911 from outside.

"Everybody asks about tankless. Here's the honest version rather than the sales version.

Tankless makes sense if you're constantly running out of hot water, you've already got the gas line and venting to support it, and you're staying in the house long enough to earn the money back. It costs more up front, sometimes a lot more once the gas and venting get sorted out.

For most houses around here, a good tank unit is still the right answer. Cheaper to install, simpler to fix, and if you flush it once a year it'll go a long time.
