Do hardwood floors have to be stained when they're refinished?
No.
For this hardwood refinishing project in Frankfort, we sanded the existing hardwood and used a clear finish with no stain.
Instead of changing the wood to a different color, the clear finish allows the natural tones, grain and board-to-board variation to become the finished look.
Take a look at the darker decorative border around the room too. Refinishing brought the surrounding natural hardwood back to life while allowing that existing detail to stand out again.
One thing homeowners should know: clear doesn't necessarily mean the finished floor will look exactly like freshly sanded raw wood. Different finish systems can influence the final tone.
Sometimes the best color for real hardwood is simply the color that's already in the wood.

Remember the Homewood flooring project where we installed plywood after removing the old tile?

Here’s the finished floor.

Removing the tile left the existing door jambs approximately 3/4 inch above the floor, so we installed plywood to help bring the floor back to the appropriate height.

The finished installation features Titan Boardwalk Pine flooring.

It’s a good reminder that replacing flooring isn’t always as simple as removing one product and putting another down. Sometimes the preparation is what makes the finished installation come together properly.

Can we fill this entire container with pop tabs?
We're getting pretty close.
When The Floor 4 U became a local pop-tab drop-off location supporting Ronald McDonald House Charities, we weren't sure how quickly they would add up.
Well…take a look.
This is what our customers and local community have helped us collect so far, and there's still room for more.
If you've been saving pop tabs at home, bring them by. Schools, churches, sports teams, Scout groups and local businesses are welcome to collect too.
One pop tab isn't much.
A whole community saving them together is a different story.
Let's fill this thing.

We recently completed this basement flooring installation in Flossmoor, Illinois, using Toucan Venice in color TFSPC606.

One of the best ways to choose a flooring product is to see it installed in a real home. A small sample doesn’t always show how the color and pattern will look across a larger area.

Can you remove LVP after it's already installed?
With most floors, you shouldn't assume you can simply take them up and put them back down.
But this Happy Feet Black Label Dynamic Fit in Alaska was chosen for this Tinley Park basement specifically because it's a loose-lay/removable flooring system.
Why does that matter in a basement?
If water ever gets underneath the flooring, this system can be taken up to access the concrete below. That allows the substrate to be properly dried, cleaned and evaluated instead of leaving moisture trapped underneath.
Depending on the circumstances, condition of the flooring and manufacturer requirements, the material may potentially be reinstalled afterward.
That's an important distinction:
Waterproof flooring doesn't make a basement waterproof.
For areas where water intrusion is a concern, we also think about what happens after water gets underneath the floor.

Why would we install plywood after removing tile?

Here’s something homeowners don’t always think about when replacing flooring.

At this Homewood project, removing the existing tile left the bottoms of the door jambs approximately 3/4 inch above the floor.

We installed plywood to help bring the floor back up to the appropriate height before moving forward with the new flooring.

It’s not the most exciting part of a renovation, but getting these details right matters just as much as the finished floor.

Can you put carpet next to hardwood flooring?
Absolutely.
You don't have to use the same flooring material throughout your entire home.
For this Frankfort carpet installation, the homeowner has hardwood in the adjoining areas while carpet creates a softer surface in this room.
The important part is what happens where the two floors meet.
Carpet-to-hardwood transitions need to be planned so the carpet edge is properly secured and the two flooring surfaces come together cleanly. Floor heights and the condition of the adjoining hardwood also need to be considered.
Choosing flooring room by room isn't necessarily a bad thing. Different areas of a home can have different needs.
The goal is making those materials look like they were meant to meet.

Should you replace your baseboards when installing new flooring?
Not always—but a flooring project can be a great time to do it.
For this basement in Peotone, we installed COREtec Galveston Oak along with new 5¼-inch baseboard and shoe molding.
The taller baseboard makes a noticeable difference in a large open space like this, but there's also an installation reason the perimeter deserves attention.
A floating floor requires the proper expansion space around fixed objects and walls according to the flooring manufacturer's requirements. Baseboard and shoe molding can cover that perimeter space while allowing the floor to move as designed.
The important part is that the trim shouldn't pin the floating floor down.
Flooring may cover most of the square footage, but the way it's finished around the perimeter can make a big difference in how complete the entire room looks.

Does new flooring look better with new baseboards?

This Peotone project included COREtec Galveston Oak flooring and new baseboards installed by The Floor 4U.

New flooring makes the biggest visual change, but replacing the baseboards at the same time can give the entire room a cleaner, more complete finished appearance.
