Why Road Grinding Matters Before Paving? A great paving project starts long before the first load of asphalt is placed. One of the most important steps in the process is road grinding, also known as milling. By removing worn or damaged pavement, grinding creates a clean, even surface that prepares the roadway for a new layer of asphalt.

This step helps improve ride quality, supports proper drainage, and allows new pavement to bond more effectively to the existing road. The result is a smoother, longer-lasting surface that can better withstand daily traffic and changing weather conditions. As highlighted in the photos from our West Modesto, CA project, road grinding creates the foundation needed for a successful paving operation. Much of this specialized milling work is performed through valued project partners, whose expertise helps prepare roadways for paving.

At George Reed, Inc., road grinding is an essential part of the company's comprehensive construction services. As a trusted heavy-civil contractor serving Northern California and the Central Valley, George Reed provides grading, sitework, roadway construction, and paving solutions backed by in-house aggregate and asphalt production. This integrated approach helps maintain quality throughout every phase of a project. Learn more at www.georgereed.com.
