The Earthworm Farm
Earthworms are low maintenance, high productivity tenants that offer a compact way to compost to kitchen garbage while simultaneously producing a highly effective fertilizer for your garden. Red Earthworms in a 2*2ft square scanner compost and consume two pounds of kitchen waste each week. That amounts to about the output of an average two-person household and saves your own trash can/waste management container from filling up before pick-up day (not to mention you and your neighbors' noses from smelling heat rotted garbage perishables). The Earthworm castings, compared with the average value mart bagged garden soil, is well worth the effort. It contains many things your beloved plants would gladly accept and possibly even love you back for, JK. The excrement is twice as full of calcium, five times richer in nitrogen, seven times richer in usable phosphorous and contains levels of available potassium, eleven times higher than the average store bought bag. Probably best of all Earthworms are and undemanding, simple and straightforward. You feed them your garbage a couple times a week, throwing a little shredded newspaper in every so often and after a few months you harvest liberal quantities of a gardener's best friend, black gold.
Building an Earthworm farm is an easy and fun project that offers a great educational experience for kids of all ages and doesn't cost a penny in most cases (unless you'd like to decorate, customize and or buy specific wood or don't own a drill and a handful of screws). Children can choose from a bait or pet store what genus of Earthworms they like (or are least grossed out by), they can help care for them by tearing up old newspapers for the bin, they can release the worms into the farm and help take them out of the container when harvesting black gold, they can help the environment by ensuring the composting of any kitchen scraps and feed them apple skins, carrot shavings, potato peels and other "worm foods". They can also use the experience for school reports, ask their teachers to start an in-school Earthworm Farm, start a save the environment and go green lifestyle campaigns, share it's progress on social media or all of the above.
Hopefully by interacting with our children in these green friendly ways we can ensure future generations have a better understanding of what it takes to live within an ecosystem instead of the way we currently bend them to the breaking point to suit our comforts and impatience.
