INFLUENCER ECONOMY — Alabama ‘fascination’ captures millions on TikTok, YouTube
From comfort creators to foodies to anglers to comedians, some Alabama Gulf Coast residents have found global notoriety, fame and even fortune on social media.
These local “influencers” or “creators” have been using video-sharing platforms such as TikTok and YouTube where they can easily disseminate content and rapidly discover and grow online audiences. This opportunity has made online sensations of otherwise seemingly average people.
Ophelia Nichols, or “Mama Tot,” a Wilmer resident, boasts 12.5 million followers on her TikTok channel, where she shares encouraging messages with a Southern, motherly, down-to-earth and (often comic) flare. Before going viral, she was employed at Lagniappe Home Store (no affiliation with this newspaper).
Matthew Isbell (Bama Beach Bum), an angler in Gulf Shores, generates millions of views on fishing videos posted to his social media accounts.
Casey Ferguson, (Instagram ) an assistant basketball coach with Spring Hill College, doubles on TikTok as a foodie, sharing cooking videos and recipes with her 2.7 million followers.
TikToker Justin Stagner, a 33-year-old from Creola, is making waves in the comedic realm under his “Southern Grandpa” persona, with 1.4 million followers.
