August is usually the month that finishes off a system that's been struggling all summer. Not because anything dramatic happens, just because the heat doesn't let up and there's no more room for a system to hide its problems.

If yours is over 12 years old and you've called us more than once this year, that's worth a real conversation. Not every old system needs replacing, but a lot of them are costing more to keep running than people realize.

We're closing in on Labor Day, and a lot of systems out there have been running nonstop since April without much of a break. If yours has started sounding a little off, or just working harder for the same result, that's not something to shrug off this late in the season.

Here's something worth thinking about. A small AC problem caught early might cost you a service call and a part. That same problem, ignored for a few weeks, can turn into a full system failure and a much bigger bill.

We see this pattern constantly. Somebody notices something off, decides to wait it out, and by the time they call us, what could've been a simple fix has turned into a compressor replacement or worse.

Heat and humidity don't do your system any favors when it's already struggling. Problems tend to snowball fast down here.

If something's been nagging at you about your AC, the cost of calling now is almost always less than the cost of waiting.

Let's play a quick game. True or false on some HVAC basics.

Bigger AC units always cool faster. False. An oversized unit actually cools poorly and wears out faster.

Ceiling fans lower the temperature of a room. False. They just move air around, but that airflow makes you feel cooler.

You should change your filter every month. Depends. Every 1 to 3 months for most homes, monthly if you've got pets or allergies.

Turning your AC off completely when you leave saves the most money. False. It actually makes your system work harder to cool back down. A few degrees up is better than off.

Third week of August, and this heat is not backing down. If you've been keeping track, your AC has basically been running nonstop since April. That's a long haul for any machine.

This week, take a minute to actually notice how your system's doing. Not just "it's on," but is it keeping up. Cooling fast enough. Every room comfortable. Nothing sounding weird. If something's off, better to catch it now than wait for it to get worse.
