A little texture goes a long way.

This fireplace runs from hardwood floors to tongue-and-groove ceilings, so the finish needed to add contrast without taking over the room.

American clay brought the warmth and texture we were after. It’s applied in super thin layers over a primer coat, which means the person behind the trowel matters just as much as the material.

Lucky for us, we know the right guy.

We’re wrapping this one up, and we’re already working with the same team on another American clay fireplace this week.

Safe to say, we like this stuff.

One by one, set by hand…

These cedar shingles look great once they’re up, but there’s no fast-forward button on this part.

Each one gets pilot holes to help prevent cracking, then gets set and nailed by hand as the siding works its way around this 1930s University District home.

And once the spring rain finally gives us a break, the whole exterior gets painted.

So if you’re a fan of the old pink shingles, drink it in now. They’ve only got a few weeks left before the new color takes over.

“I’m wiry.” — Nigel Gruff, The Replacements

Jeff is wiry too, which tracks. That’s Jeff, owner and operator of Jet Landscaping, and after 17+ years in the trade, the guy knows his way around a project.

He and his team of seasoned non-replacements are laying pavers and planting around the perimeter, with a walkway that wraps from the front entry down below the back patio to a small private seating area away from the home.

We’re stoked on the pops of color they brought in against the more neutral tones of the house. And because this is the South Hills, everything is deer resistant…because the deer up here sort of run the joint.

More to come as this one gets closer to the finish line.

CPR training, but make it painless.

This morning, our crew spent time with Matt and Danielle from for CPR and First Aid training — complete with a lot of laughs, a few Office references, and a very important reminder that “Stayin’ Alive” is more than just a great jobsite playlist addition.

We’re proud of the injury-free run our crew has been on, but safety isn’t something you coast on. Training like this helps us prepare for the worst, while staying focused on the real goal: preventing those situations from happening in the first place.

The work Fight or Flight does for our community matters, and we’re grateful to learn from them.

What’s in the shed, eh?

A little bit of everything worth saving.

As this 1930s University District remodel keeps moving, we’ve been storing some of the original pieces our clients called out early on: old doors, wood paneling, the kitchen clock, oven vent fan, True Temper garden tool hangers, glass door hardware, and even the original rotary phone.

Some of it may find its way back into the home. Some of it may get reimagined. And whatever doesn’t make it back will still be worth passing along to our friends at Home ReSource.

And for you old Missoulians — how cool is that old KGVO-13 sticker?

New deck out back.

This 1930s University District home got a new deck built with TimberTech Legacy decking in Tigerwood. Warm tone, low maintenance, and a much better setup than the old deck it replaced.

And yes, we’re sure you’re wondering about the pink — or as we’ve been calling them, “rugged salmon” — shingles.

If enough of you say we should keep ’em, maybe we’ll listen. But in the coming weeks, we’ll be refinishing the exterior to keep the charm without, well… all the salmon.

Starting this project around the pizza oven.

Last night we got everyone together on site to kick off the next phase: clients, architects, engineers, demo team, and our crew. Chef Ryan absolutely crushed it with salad, wood-fired pizza, and cookies to finish things off.

Pizza parties get a bad rap, but we’re all for bringing the right people together early — including the neighbors.

This vanity skips the usual setup and looks straight out toward farmland, wildlife, and the Bitterroot River.

Look closely and you’ll catch a family of geese, a few moo-cows, and even Ch-paa-qn Peak doing its thing in the distance.
