We’re honored to be part of a project that brings art, landscape, and Indigenous teachings together at the Weisman Art Museum.

As part of WAM’s upcoming exhibition, ‘Merciless’: Indigenous Lands Since 1776, Native artists Natchez Beaulieu and Marlena Myles are creating an outdoor installation exploring Dakota relationships with Wakpá Tháŋka, the Mississippi River, through teachings of origin, responsibility, and the natural world.

Natchez Beaulieu’s intricate mosaic design incorporates the medicine wheel and traditional Anishinaabe star knowledge. Our team is brought her design to life by hand-cutting dry-cast concrete pavers and meticulously assembling them into the finished patio.

Marlena Myles has designed a series of metal panels to accompany the patio, serving as both a visual backdrop and canopy. Together, the pieces explore Dakota cosmology, origin, and responsibility while inviting visitors to experience these teachings alongside the Mississippi River. (Currently being manufactured by Chicago Ave Fire Arts Center and will share more soon!)

We’re excited to see these artists’ work come together with the landscape as part of this larger exhibition.

“Merciless”: Indigenous Lands Since 1776 opens September 26 and will be on view through May 23, 2027.

Fall is quickly approaching, but that doesn’t mean outdoor season has to end. A thoughtfully designed fire pit can extend the time you enjoy your outdoor space well into the cooler months.

One unique feature of this client’s sunken fire pit is that the space also contributes to stormwater management. Rainwater is captured within the sunken area, while the permeable pavers allow water to infiltrate through the surface and into the underlying soil, helping reduce surface runoff.

Beautiful, functional, and designed with the landscape in mind.

This terraced yard features a Soake Pool that has become a favorite neighborhood hangout for the kids all summer long. During the cold winter months, the heated pool transforms into a warm retreat, offering Mom and Dad some much-needed respite.

The kitchen has always been the heart of the home. In the summer, it belongs outside.

There’s something special about gathering around a meal prepared in the open air. The smell of a wood-fired pizza, friends lingering around the table, another story shared before the sun goes down. It’s less about the outdoor kitchen itself and more about everything it makes possible.

Designed for clients with a passion for cooking, this outdoor living space was imagined as a true extension of the home. A wood- and gas-fired pizza oven, built-in grill, generous dining space, comfortable lounge areas, and layered lighting come together to create a landscape that’s just as inviting after dark as it is on a summer afternoon.

The best outdoor kitchens aren’t standalone features. They’re part of a larger story, where cooking, gathering, and the landscape become one seamless experience.
After all, what’s better than a wood-fired pizza... in your own backyard?

A cover worth celebrating! We’re proud to see biota featured on the cover of The Scoop, Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association (MNLA)'s trade publication, alongside our Gold Award-winning project, Layered Landscape.

This landscape was designed around the idea that sustainability and beauty should never be separate. Recycled composite decking, locally sourced stone, preserved mature trees, and a thoughtful mix of natives, nativars, ornamentals, and edibles come together to create a landscape that is both highly functional and designed to evolve over time.

The result is a series of connected outdoor rooms where a family can gather, garden, learn, and grow together, while the landscape grows with them.

Congratulations to our entire team on this well-deserved recognition. We’re honored to see this project on the cover and even more proud of the thoughtful work behind it.

This week's Photo of the Week goes to our Build crew... because this is just plain cool.

What looks like a simple patio is actually a permanent basketball court built right into the pavers.

The free throw and three-point line were carefully measured, marked, precision-cut, and inlaid with contrasting pavers, creating court lines that will never need to be painted or repainted.

Since craftsmanship also means caring about how the work gets done, the team uses water while cutting to significantly reduce airborne silica dust and keep the jobsite safer.

The clients also wanted to update their existing deck, so we brought in our friends at MN Fine Homes to bring their vision to life.

The crew was feeling pretty good after pulling Phase 1 off. Naturally, our Site Manager, Tom, had to test out the court...we're still waiting on confirmation of that dunk.

Built to impress. Built to play.

The best landscapes are defined by the memories they make possible.

By transforming a sloped backyard into a series of thoughtful terraces, this family gained something they never had before: room to live outside.

In the summer, the lawn becomes home to a swimming pool. When winter arrives, it transforms into a private hockey rink for a family that loves the game. Designed with flexibility in mind, every space has a purpose.

The open lawn gives kids and dogs room to run, and the wood-burning fire pit becomes the backdrop for stories shared with friends. An outdoor dining space brings family dinners outside, while a tucked-away raised seating area offers a quiet place for mom and dad to unwind with a glass of wine overlooking it all.

Because the most meaningful outdoor spaces don’t just change with the seasons. They grow with the families who call them home.

Let’s realize your beautiful biota
