When you’re small, everyone asks you-
What’s your favorite color?

You learn to have an answer at the ready. You enter into discussions over whether or not black and white are colors. You take these choices and discussions quite seriously. (I recently had to mediate an overly heated conversation on the “color” white between my kids).

But here’s what I want to know…What’s your least favorite color?

Three years ago I started painting, and at the time was pretty sure pink was my answer. Then I realized that pink (especially dark, magenta-y pink) compliments literally every color. I stand corrected. Now I like pink so much I’m actually grateful for it.

I’m slightly embarrassed to say I used to not care for blue. And there again, started painting and realized that hello- earth, water, sky, BLUE is life. Baby blue still bugs me, and navy blue is only ok in small doses.

Next up- purple. I’ve remained somewhat unenthusiastic about purple. So how surprised was I when I started working on my largest canvas to date, and a creative exercise I did before diving in drew me to purple. I couldn’t ignore it, had to paint with it, and before I knew it, I had a canvas covered in 17 shades of purple. Adding a little purple to yellow tones down the garish. Mixing purple into that magenta I love makes it more interesting. Purple is having her moment on this piece.

That signature means she’s done. And I’ll show you “I’m Sill a Little Suspicious of Purple” tomorrow.

So- what’s your least favorite color?

First day of summer vacation! My kids are home and already bored.

I’m trying to go about my day and paint and work around them whilst occasionally throwing them a sandwich and some fruit. Finding a summertime rhythm is hard, especially on rainy days like today. But we will, they will. There are many fun camps and beach days ahead. Today is just a transition and transitions are a little painful.

And so- we imagine ourselves on a beach, napping to the sound of the waves, tasting the salty air, basking in the glow of a hot pink umbrella.

These two are now available (the paintings, not my kids). They just helped me name them- “Mint Twist” and “Lemon Drops are a Breakfast Food”. Here you go- https://blueberrybackroads.com/collections/original-art

P.S. I just heard Thomas mumble, “Summer vacation is off to a bad start.”😆

Aren’t beaches romantic? There is so much love and joy, relaxation and romance novel reading taking place under those jellybean colored umbrellas.

I’m reading “Georgia” by Dawn Tripp, and it absolutely deserves to be read under a beach umbrella.

Do you have a favorite summertime book? A beach reading list? I’m devouring books lately and love recommendations!

Summer is here, and when I’m not in it, I want to paint it. Water. Happy colors. More water. I’ve never found so much joy in painting summer. It’s fun!☀️

9”x12” acrylic and chalk pastel on paper
I’d say she’s available but as I look at this picture, I think she needs a little tweaking. I shall tweak and repost! Maybe! Depends on what the tweak monsters do…
