When you’re small, everyone asks you-
What’s your favorite color?
You learn to have an answer at the ready. You enter into discussions over whether or not black and white are colors. You take these choices and discussions quite seriously. (I recently had to mediate an overly heated conversation on the “color” white between my kids).
But here’s what I want to know…What’s your least favorite color?
Three years ago I started painting, and at the time was pretty sure pink was my answer. Then I realized that pink (especially dark, magenta-y pink) compliments literally every color. I stand corrected. Now I like pink so much I’m actually grateful for it.
I’m slightly embarrassed to say I used to not care for blue. And there again, started painting and realized that hello- earth, water, sky, BLUE is life. Baby blue still bugs me, and navy blue is only ok in small doses.
Next up- purple. I’ve remained somewhat unenthusiastic about purple. So how surprised was I when I started working on my largest canvas to date, and a creative exercise I did before diving in drew me to purple. I couldn’t ignore it, had to paint with it, and before I knew it, I had a canvas covered in 17 shades of purple. Adding a little purple to yellow tones down the garish. Mixing purple into that magenta I love makes it more interesting. Purple is having her moment on this piece.
That signature means she’s done. And I’ll show you “I’m Sill a Little Suspicious of Purple” tomorrow.
So- what’s your least favorite color?
