Meet Josh!

For more than 20 years, Josh has built his career in the electrical trade by taking on new challenges, supporting the people around him, and continuing to learn along the way.

Today, as an Electrical Foreman with Preferred Electric, a Horwitz Company, he leads crews through complex projects while keeping safety and teamwork at the center of the job. Whether he’s coordinating nearly 30 electricians on a fast-paced project or mentoring someone newer to the trade, Josh believes leadership starts with setting a positive example.

Modern healthcare facilities rely on qualified electrical infrastructure to support critical patient care around the clock.

Our team completed an $11 million electrical modernization project at the VA Hospital, serving as the general contractor on a complex facility upgrade designed to correct critical electrical deficiencies throughout the facility.

The project included:
• Complete replacement of 11 medium-voltage substations, while limiting the power outages to less then 8 hours.
• Complete replacement of all campus 13,800-volt cables within existing 7,000’ duct bank
• Infrastructure improvements supporting the 13,800-volt electrical distribution system
• Replacement of two emergency 480/277-volt switchboards that supply power from the generator system to the critical building systems.
• Replacement of 180 parking lot lighting to new LED energy efficient lights

Working within an active hospital required careful coordination to ensure patient care was never interrupted. Through detailed planning, clear communication, and expert ex*****on, our team safely relocated and installed multiple 18,000-pound substations while strategically sequencing outages, utilizing temporary power, and implementing phased power transfers to support uninterrupted healthcare services.

We are proud to have contributed to the restoration of Minneapolis City Hall, recently recognized as one of Finance & Commerce’s Top Projects of 2025!

Working alongside Shaw-Lundquist Construction and Davis Lighting & Systems and the entire project team, we installed energy-efficient LED lighting, advanced dimming controls and a custom motorized flagpole system designed to provide safe, reliable operation while preserving one of the building’s most recognizable features.

We’re honored to have played a part in modernizing this iconic Minneapolis landmark while helping protect the character that makes it special.

We're proud to have partnered with Shaw-Lundquist on the recently completed renovation of Minneapolis City Hall and honored to receive this recognition from their field engineer, Brody Olson. Their testimonial reflects the strong collaboration, mutual trust, and dedication to quality that made this project a success.

Working alongside Davis Lighting and the entire project team, Preferred Electric delivered:

- High-efficiency LED lighting upgrades with 0–10V dimming to improve performance, flexibility, and energy efficiency.
- Advanced lighting controls, including forward- and reverse-phase dimming, tailored to the unique needs of each space.
- A custom motorized flagpole system that provides safe, reliable operation while preserving one of the building's most recognizable architectural features.

Equipment failures and unexpected downtime are often caused by electrical issues that go unnoticed until it's too late.

Thermography scanning helps facility managers identify hidden problems early, giving them the opportunity to make repairs before they turn into costly downtime. By detecting abnormal heat patterns that signal developing electrical issues, thermography scanning gives facility managers the time and insight to plan maintenance on their schedule rather than react to unexpected failures.

Behind every successful manufacturing operation is reliable infrastructure.

Our team recently completed a multi-phase renovation and electrical upgrade project for a manufacturing facility in Minneapolis. The work included new office and laboratory spaces, upgraded electrical distribution systems, refrigeration equipment connections, process controls, and specialized manufacturing equipment installations.

Careful planning allowed construction to move forward while facility operations continued, creating a seamless transition to enhanced capabilities and increased efficiency.

Meet Elliott Olson!

Growing up in a family of electricians and skilled tradespeople, Elliott developed a passion for the industry early on. Today, as an Electrical Project Manager at Preferred Electric, he helps lead projects from estimating and preconstruction through completion while building strong relationships with clients and project teams. What he enjoys most is collaborating with the talented field leaders and tradespeople whose expertise help bring every project to life.

Outside of work, Elliott enjoys spending time with family, exploring the outdoors, and appreciating everything Minnesota has to offer after years of traveling the world.
