Merlo crews have been out in force working day and night to get Boynton Bridge project to the finish line. We set 5 prestressed concrete beams on September 17 and returned on September 30 to pull off an impressive 100 cubic-yard deck pour.

Some of you may be wondering about the workers positioned on each side of the abutment as the beams are being set. Their role is to make sure the beams are perfectly placed on the bearing pads and beam seats, which have a precise layout and centerline markings.

Once beams are set, Merlo surveyors record elevations and grades across each beam at specified locations to ensure that the deck pans are installed properly between each beam, and also that a perfect 8” concrete deck can be placed for the bridge. They also consider the camber (upward curvature) of the bridge beams, the load that will be placed on the beams and deck pans, and the final elevation profile after permanent loads are applied.

The finished bridge must be prepared to safely carry vehicles and pedestrians, so precision is a must.

Merlo recently set five 78-foot-long, 64,600-pound prestressed concrete spread box beams for the permanent bridge structure at our Boynton Bridge project. We made a few adjustments here that really moved the needle on safety and ergonomics for our crew.

For one, we installed the overhang brackets before setting fascia beams 1 and 5 so workers didn't have to carry brackets onto the beams and work over the water once beams were set. This reduced safety risks and ergonomic issues. It's also more productive than installing the overhang brackets after the beams are set.

We also installed orange safety stanchions and lifeline fall protection before setting beams. This allowed our workers in harnesses to attach their lanyards to the lifeline before crossing the beam, which makes walking on the beams much safer.

Merlo crews on the Rogue Wind Project have been focused on the substation road recently. The scope involves over 2 miles of roadway, excavation to subgrade, installation of geogrid and 12” of stone, culvert replacements, and grass- and concrete-lined drainage channels. Shout out to our own Scott Cooper for capturing the action.

We recently set 7 of the precast concrete box culvert sections and 5 wingwall sections at the Broadhead Run Box Culvert project in Indiana County. This is a pretty complex job.

First, the seven culvert sections had to be post-tensioned in a specific order by the cables that ran through them to ensure a tight fit. Wingwall sections had to be unloaded, flipped, and then rotated to their final position before setting, which required having an auxiliary hoist setup on the crane and re-rigging our adjustable chain slings for each step to ensure proper rotation and up righting.

Secondly, the site is next to an active railroad line, so we had to coordinate with a representative on planning work around moving trains. It also meant ensuring all lifting equipment and rigging had a rated capacity of 150% greater than the load to comply with railroad safety requirements.

Every project brings its own hurdles to overcome. It keeps our work interesting.

The Rogue Wind Project shows the diversity of our team's capabilities, and also Merlo's ability to manage a complex scope. Here’s what we’ve been up to lately, after previously completing this project’s site development, access roads, and wind turbine pads:

Installed a CMP squash pipe and cast-in-place headwall to replace an undersized culvert

Installed 2+ miles of substation roadway to meet the owner's roadway specs

installed chain link fence to permanently enclose three spare blades that will be stored onsite

Merlo is continuing a strong run as a construction leader in the energy industry.

When New York and Washington D.C. were attacked on September 11th, it hit close to home when Flight 93 crashed down in nearby Somerset County.

Merlo had the privilege of doing some of the concrete work on the Flight 93 Memorial Visitors Center, which provides a place for the public and families of the Flight 93 passengers to pay tribute and honor their loved ones. Helping to memorialize these Americans on this hallowed ground was the honor of a lifetime.

Today, we reflect on all those we lost, and also the courage, selflessness, and unity that make our country great. Never forgotten.

Merlo continues to rack up the wins! We have been verified as the apparent low bidder on two new PennDOT bridge projects.

The first is the rehabilitation of the South 22nd Street Bridge over Seese Run in Windber Borough, Somerset County. The project includes minor structure repairs, roadway widening, and roadway upgrades.

The second is a replacement of a concrete slab bridge carrying US 322 over Campbell Run in Jefferson County with a new precast reinforced concrete box culvert and other miscellaneous construction.
