Before the Rain Comes, Give Your Fence a Check

Summer is winding down, which makes now a good time to take a walk around your fence and see how it’s holding up before the wet weather settles in.

A few things to look for:

• Loose, cracked, or missing fence boards
• Posts that are leaning or starting to move
• Rot or soft spots near the bottom of posts and boards
• Rusted, loose, or missing fasteners
• Gates that are sagging, dragging, or no longer closing properly
• Sections that have started leaning or pulling away from the posts

Catching a small problem now can save you from a much bigger repair after months of rain and wind.

From replacing a few damaged boards to tackling a larger fence repair, Milwaukie Lumber has the cedar, pressure-treated lumber, posts, fasteners, and hardware to help you get the job done.

Let's wrap up this week with a final checklist! Before fall weather settles in, use the long weekend to give the outside of your house a good once-over.

You don't need to start a major project. Just take a walk around the house and look for the little things that could become bigger problems once the rain arrives.

Check your siding and exterior trim for damage or soft spots. Look around windows and doors for failing caulk or gaps. Check exposed wood for signs of rot or decay, and make sure exterior repairs are using materials suited for Northwest weather.

Find something that needs attention? Milwaukie Lumber has you covered!

From siding, Forest Trim and primed cedar and spruce to pressure-treated lumber, flashing, window tape, caulking, fasteners and other weatherproofing materials, we can help you get what you need to make the repair.

A few minutes looking around this weekend could tell you exactly what needs attention before fall.

Water and untreated wood are not a great combination, especially through a Pacific Northwest winter.

Before the wet season arrives, take a look around the lower areas of your home, porches, stairs and other exterior structures. Pay attention to wood that sits close to the ground, contacts concrete, or is exposed to places where water regularly collects.

If you're replacing damaged material in an area that's exposed to moisture, choosing the right lumber matters.

Milwaukie Lumber carries pressure-treated lumber in a wide range of sizes for exterior projects where additional protection from moisture, decay and insects is needed.

We also carry treated plywood, posts, timbers, fasteners and other materials to help you build or repair exterior projects with Northwest weather in mind.

Don't just replace damaged wood with whatever is handy. Use the right material for where it's going.

The Pacific Northwest wet season can be hard on the exterior of your home. Before the rain becomes a regular part of the forecast, take a walk around the house and give your siding and exterior trim a closer look.

Watch for cracked or damaged siding, soft or deteriorating trim, loose boards, failed joints, and areas where water may be getting behind the exterior.

Finding a problem now gives you a chance to repair it before months of wet weather make it worse.

Whether you're replacing a damaged piece or tackling a larger repair, Milwaukie Lumber has siding and exterior trim options for the job. We carry James Hardie, LP SmartSide and cedar siding, along with Forest Trim and primed clear cedar and spruce trim options.

And don't forget what's behind it. We also carry flashing, weatherproofing materials, fasteners, caulking and other accessories you'll need to make the repair properly.

Take a look now. A small repair in September can save you from a much bigger repair later.

Before the rain settles in, take a walk around your house and check the little gaps.

Cracked or failing caulk around windows, doors, exterior trim, and other penetrations can give water a path into places it doesn't belong. Over time, even a small opening can lead to damaged trim, siding, or other problems.

Look for caulk that is cracked, peeling, pulling away, or missing entirely. It's also a good time to check the flashing and weatherproofing around windows, doors, and other exterior openings.

If you find something that needs attention, we've got the supplies to help you get it sealed up before the wet weather arrives.

Milwaukie Lumber carries caulking and caulking guns, window flashing tape, window casing materials, and an assortment of Z-metal for exterior weatherproofing projects.

A little work now can help prevent a much bigger project later.
