Our President, Norman Barrientos, AIA, joined public works professionals at the American Public Works Association (APWA) national event to explore the latest innovations and design challenges in public works.

He spent time networking with public works peers and talking municipal infrastructure and facility planning with Sam Watkins of BRW ARCHITECTS, one of our project partners in Dallas.

We had a fantastic evening networking at the American Public Works Association - Southern California Chapter event at PWX 2026 in Houston! 🤠

Our President, Norman Barrientos, AIA, caught up with old friends and met new ones, including our recent client, the City of Berkeley, represented by Joy Brown, Interim Assistant Public Works Director.

Joy and Norman also had a great conversation with James Hmielak of the City of Avalon on Catalina Island about Avalon's storied history.

Last month, our team headed to Houston for PWX 2026 to learn what's new in the industry! 📚

While we were there, we also had the chance to meet with some of our clients in person.

Our Project Architect Isabelle Jardas sat down with the Town of Quispamsis for a page-turn with American Public Works Association Past President Gary Losier and Mike Danells. It was great to have our team and clients all in one place!

It's great to see fleet management change in action!

We recently visited Justin Hightower and Christi Oca at JEA's Jacksonville Fleet Maintenance site and saw firsthand how Justin and his team are rapidly executing facility improvements bay by bay.

Justin gave us a tour highlighting the upgrades underway to efficiently support 400+ light duty vehicles. We also stopped by JEA's Southside facility to review plans for converting existing warehouse space into dedicated heavy duty repair bays.

Hats off to Justin and the entire team for an impressive vision, smart facility strategy, and seamless ex*****on to boost maintenance throughput across the fleet.

We've had a busy summer with new clients and projects coming on board across the country.

Our newest client is the Village of Howard, where we've been engaged to redesign their 26-year-old Public Works facility. A quarter century of wear and evolving operational demands means this project is a great example of why long-term facility planning matters from day one.

We're working closely with our engineering partner, Ayres Associates out of Green Bay, to bring this project to life.

In August, the Barrientos team took to the water for a scenic outing on the Milwaukee River.

We set off from Pere Marquette Park aboard our pontoon, stocked with snacks and beverages hand-picked by our staff. From there, we cruised past the high rises of downtown Milwaukee, through the Historic Third Ward District, and out to the Lakefront Harbor.

Neil and Matt took turns piloting the boat, making sure everyone had a great view along the way.

On our way back to Pere Marquette Park, we were "invaded" by a flotilla of kayaks following a floating barge band. We happily waited for them to pass before docking.

A maintenance facility is far more than a building.

Ross Jackson, CAFM, put it best after connecting with our team at GFX. A well-designed O&M facility is one of the most important operational tools a public fleet has, directly impacting technician productivity, fleet uptime, and the long-term sustainability of daily operations.

At Barrientos Design, this is exactly what we've built our practice around for over 27 years. Every facility we design is grounded in years of research and real-world operational experience, giving agencies not only a facility designed around their mission, but also the data to justify that investment through measurable operational and financial returns.

Our President, Norman Barrientos, AIA will be speaking at the Sustainable Fleet Technology Conference & Expo 2026 (NC Clean Energy Technology Center) in Durham, North Carolina on August 26.

Norman's panel, "Assessing & Planning Facilities for All Fuel Types," will focus on the building and site implications of supporting EV, CNG, hydrogen, and other evolving fleet technologies.

Norman will be discussing how fleet organizations can assess repair bays, utility capacity, ventilation, fueling and charging infrastructure, life-safety requirements, and phased capital improvements before committing to vehicle transitions.

Fleet transition planning and facility transition planning need to move together, and attendees of Norman's panel will learn strategies to successfully make this happen. If you're attending, Norman looks forward to connecting with you in Durham!
