Did you know that silent water leaks can waste thousands of gallons and add hundreds to your bills before you even notice them?

Even the tiniest leak can turn into a major problem. Small leaks can not only waste water, but they can also cause serious damage to walls and floors and even create an environment for mold. Here’s how to check your home for hidden leaks:

💧 Check your water meter. Turn off all water, note the meter reading, wait at least two hours without using water, then check again. If the reading changes, it could indicate that you have a leak.

💧 Test your toilets with food coloring. Add a few drops to the tank and wait 15 to 20 minutes. If color appears in the bowl without flushing, your flapper valve could be leaking.

💧 Inspect taps and showerheads for drips. Even small, slow drips can waste plenty of water each day and indicate worn fixtures that need replacement.

💧 Monitor your water bill for sudden increases. If your bill has gone up with no change in usage, it can be a sign of a leak.

💧 Look for visual warning signs. Water stains; discolored walls or ceilings; mold, musty smells; or damp patches all indicate hidden leaks.

Spotting leaks early saves you from stress, money, and serious damage down the road. If you think you’ve spotted a leak in your home, don’t hesitate to reach out to our Pro Tech Mechanical team!

In honor of Building Safety Month, we are sharing an important reminder: If you live in an older home, your electrical system may be overdue for critical safety upgrades, even if everything seems to be working fine.

Electrical systems in older homes were designed decades ago, when households used far fewer appliances and devices. Today's households demand more power, and outdated systems can pose serious safety risks. Here are essential upgrades every older home should consider:

⚡ Upgrade your electrical panel. If you still have a fuse box or a 60-100 amp panel, it can't handle modern electrical demands. Upgrading to a 200-amp panel offers higher capacity and can fit more circuits.

⚡ Replace knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring. These outdated wiring systems can deteriorate over time, increasing the risk of fire.

⚡ Install ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) and arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) outlets. GFCIs prevent electrocution in wet areas like kitchens and bathrooms, while AFCIs protect against electrical fires in bedrooms and living spaces. Many older homes don’t have these essential protections.

⚡ Add whole-house surge protection. Modern electronics and appliances need more protection from power surges than appliances that would’ve been in older homes. Surge protectors prevent expensive damage and extend appliance lifespan.

⚡ Replace two-prong outlets with three-prong grounded outlets. Two-prong outlets lack grounding, which can become dangerous. Switching to a three-prong outlet improves safety by reducing the risk of electric shock and protecting sensitive electronics.

If you have an older home or haven’t had a recent electrical safety inspection, reach out to Pro Tech Mechanical; we're here to help!
