Historic Milwaukee's 2026 building list is out! Swipe through for sneak peek at a few spaces to explore during the unique weekend (September 26-27).

The Huron Building (Saturday, 10-3)
Milwaukee City Hall (Saturday & Sunday, 10-5)
America's Black Holocaust Museum (Saturday, 10-3)

Be sure to check out our project, Vaughn Public Library, in American Libraries magazine this month for their "2026 Library Design Showcase"!

Vaughn Public Library in Ashland WI underwent historic preservation work to the restore the historic brownstone exterior of the 1888 building, as well as interior renovations to modernize the building's aging infrastructure. The updates included a new central staircase, updates to the children and teen areas, and the addition of a new large demonstration kitchen.

We are thrilled to announce that our project, ThriveOn King, has been awarded special recognition by AIA Wisconsin for historic preservation and its role in furthering justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in our state.

The transformative project took the former Schuester’s/Gimbel’s department store in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Milwaukee and restored both the interior and exterior of the building, creating new multi-family housing and a community hub for the neighborhood.

The new facility spans an entire city block and has become the home of Malaika Early Learning Center, offices for the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, the research department of the Medical College of Wisconsin, a Versiti blood donation center, a Kinship Café location, JobWorks MKE services, and 90 units of multi-family housing.

At Lafayette Towers, we turned overlooked spaces into sought-after amenities. Much more than a renovation, we refreshed the multi-family residences to create equity and connection between the two towers and for their residents. The neutral and elegant interiors blend warmth, efficiency, and style. The new Marcia P. Coggs Health and Human Services Center has now served Milwaukee County residents for one year! The building’s namesake honors Marcia P. Coggs, the first African American woman elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly and longtime advocate for children and families in the pursuit of equitable access to essential services. The building design was inspired by Milwaukee County’s “no wrong door” policy, which seeks to place all DHHS and community partners’ services in a singular, easily identifiable location. By sculpting the built environment by this guiding principle, community access to essential services is strengthened, the root causes of issues are identified more quickly, the diverse needs of patrons are fulfilled more efficiently, and the overall experience for patrons and staff is more dignified. We are grateful for the awards and recognition this project has received so far!

Last week, the City of Madison celebrated the grand opening of the expanded and renovated Warner Park Recreation Center. What began as a facility assessment in 2017 has evolved into a community-driven investment in recreation, wellness, and connection.

The enhanced facility features a second gymnasium, new gathering spaces, and a reconfigured layout that will expand opportunities for programming, events, and everyday use.

Achieving LEED Silver certification, the project creates a more welcoming, sustainable, and flexible community resource while supporting the evolving needs of the surrounding neighborhood.

Our very own Alex Ramsey will be on the panel "Brutalist Buildings: Renovate or Move On?" at the SCUP annual conference next Monday 7/20/2026 at 2:00 PM.

"Mid-century modern buildings, many in Brutalist style, proliferate on campuses and are notoriously hard to adapt. Beyond aesthetic challenges, they demand strategic investment to address physical challenges, evolving pedagogy, and student needs. This session explores how strategic, programmatic, economic, and facility renewal analyses are integrated to determine the fates of Brutalist-era campus structures, with examples from Boston University and University of Wisconsin–Green Bay. You will gain practical frameworks for evaluating Brutalist buildings that consider renovate-versus-replacement costs, operational challenges, deferred maintenance, heritage value, reuse feasibility, and sustainability, helping you make informed and defensible decisions on renovation, transformation, or replacement."

Alex will be joined by Paula Ganyard, Library Director, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay; Lisa Hynes, Executive Director Campus Planning, Boston University; and Bob Mohr, Principal, Shepley Bulfinch.
