How to Cope with Electrical Injuries

Situation 1:

Cardiac arrest. Heart action may stop if control centres of the heart are paralyzed.

Action:

Start cardiopulmonary resuscitation immediately.

Situation 2:

Ventricular fibrillation. This condition is more likely to be caused by a shock of relatively low voltage. The heart muscles lose the rhythm and throw the heart into spasms.

Action:

Start cardiopulmonary resuscitation immediately.

Situation 3:

Breathing stops. Electric shock often causes breathing to stop.

Action:

Start artificial respiration immediately and monitor the pulse to ensure that blood is circulating. If a flow of oxygen to the lungs can be maintained by artificial respiration until the paralysis wears off, normal breathing will usually begin again.

Situation 4:

Electrical burns. Current passing through the body generates heat and may cause blisters on the skin. If the current is strong enough, it may destroy body tissue and result in severe electrical burns. The outward appearance of electrical burns may not seem serious, but they are often very deep and are slow to heal.

Action:

Standard emergency procedure for burns. Prompt medical attention is required to prevent infection. Examine the victim for an exit burn as well as an entry burn.
Involuntary Muscular Reaction

Involuntary muscular reaction is an effect of electric shock that has been experienced by everyone who has made accidental contact with an electric circuit.

Even household currents may cause the victim to react so he or she is unable to let go and clear himself or herself of the contact.
If the current is strong enough, this involuntary muscular reaction can be sufficiently violent to cause serious damage to muscles and bones. In addition to freezing the victim to an energized conductor, involuntary muscular reaction may cause a victim to jump or fall which could result in a more serious injury.

Hazard #2: Damaged Tools and Equipment
Exposure to damaged electrical tools and equipment can be very dangerous. Do not fix anything unless you are qualified to do so. Thoroughly check for cracks, cuts or abrasions on cables, wires and cords. In case of any defects, have them repaired or replaced. Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedures should be performed at all times before commencing electrical maintenance and repairs. LOTO procedures are there to protect all workers on a worksite.

Pyramid Tip Of The Day Regarding Electrical Hazards :
Hazard #1: Overhead Power Lines
Overhead powered and energized electrical lines have high voltages which can cause major burns and electrocution to workers. Remember to maintain a minimum distance of 10 feet from overhead power lines and nearby equipment. Conduct site surveys to ensure that nothing is stored under overhead power lines. Also, safety barriers and signs must be installed to warn nearby non-electrical workers of the hazards present in the area.

Electrical Safety Tips

Avoid overloading your home’s electrical circuits by using octopus plugs and having too many things plugged into one outlet.
Use high-quality surge protectors for expensive electronics to prevent electrical fires and damage to the equipment.
When disconnecting an electrical cord, pull from the plug, not the cord itself.
Do not use space heaters in rooms where children or pets are unsupervised.
Turn off the space heater and unplug it when not in use.
Make sure space heaters are at least 3 feet away from any combustible materials such as clothing, draperies, rugs, and bedding.
Always follow manufacturers’ instructions to avoid electrical hazards and prevent injuries.
Replace worn or old heating pads or electric blankets. These usually have a lifespan of no more than 10 years. Look for any dark, charred or frayed spots or damaged cords.
Never use heating appliances, such as heating pads, electric blankets and space heaters while sleeping.
Never allow pets to sleep on an electric blanket or place anything on top of it. It can cause the blanket to overheat.
If you are traveling for the holidays or vacation, make sure that all heat generating electrical equipment is unplugged before you leave.
Always match the power requirements of your decorations with the amperage rates of the extension cords you may be using. Make sure the cord is rated at least 20% higher than the connected loads.
Turn off indoor and outdoor decorations before you leave home or go to sleep.
When the power goes out, turn off any major appliances. Larger appliances left on can cause an over-load.
Always keep a good supply of flashlights, batteries, and other such supplies in case of a power outage or emergency.
Remember, while winter is the most common time of year for home fires, most are preventable. Share these tips and set safety guidelines in your home. Do not attempt to fix electrical problems in your home on your home. This can lead to accidents, injuries and electrical fires. Electrical fires can start suddenly and in areas that are out of site. Regularly check your smoke detectors and change the batteries as needed.
