Our team will be off the road Friday night and Saturday while the storm moves through. We will be back answering calls Sunday once conditions are safe, covering storm-related electrical and HVAC issues across Milton, Pace, Pensacola, Gulf Breeze, and Cantonment.

The calls we see most after a storm:

Lightning strike damage. If a strike came within a few blocks, your panel, HVAC, and electronics may have taken a surge even without a direct hit.

Flooded or wet electrical panels. Do not touch. Wait for a licensed electrician.

AC units that will not restart when the power comes back. Often a tripped contactor or a surge-damaged capacitor.

Standby generators that failed when the grid dropped. We service Generac, Kohler, and other brands.

Starting Sunday: (850) 994-5467. We will prioritize safety hazards first, then service, in the order calls come in. Stay safe this weekend and ride it out.

Portable generator safety. Please read this before the storm hits.

Carbon monoxide from portable generators kills more people after Florida hurricanes than the storms themselves. Every year.

The rules are not optional:

Never run a portable generator indoors. Not a garage, not a porch, not under an overhang.

Minimum 20 feet from your house, exhaust pointing away from doors, windows, and vents.

Install battery-powered CO detectors on every floor if you do not already have them.

Never backfeed power into your house through a dryer outlet or a generator cord into a wall receptacle. It can kill linemen and start fires.

If you want a standby generator installed with a proper transfer switch so you never run a portable again, that is a conversation for after the storm. Right now, run safe.

October in Northwest Florida is a stress test on your HVAC system, just a different kind than August was.

The heat is not relentless, but the humidity stays. The runtimes swing wide. Small problems that hid all summer start to show. Now is when a proper diagnosis costs less, takes less time, and leaves you with a system you can trust into winter.

That is the standard Josh Rogers, PE, MBA holds McCombs Electrical Heating & Air to.

Three things to do before Isaias arrives, in order of impact:

Unplug sensitive electronics. TVs, gaming consoles, computers, anything with a circuit board that is not a major appliance. A power strip is not surge protection, it is a convenience outlet. Pull the plug.

Clear access to your main breaker panel. If the storm floods your yard, you need to be able to reach it. Move anything stacked in front of it.

If you have whole-home surge protection at the panel, you are covered on fridges, HVAC, water heater, and wiring. If you do not, note it for next storm season. Right now, focus on items 1 and 2.

The best way to tell if your AC is running too much is not a rule of thumb. It is comparison.

Ask yourself: is the system running noticeably longer than it did in similar weather earlier this year? Is the house still reaching the thermostat setting? Is airflow at the vents the same as it always was? Has the electric bill jumped without any change in weather or usage?

Any one of those "no" answers moves this from "keep an eye on it" to "have it looked at."

If you have a standby generator, test it under load as soon as possible, not just the weekly self-exercise.

Here's what the self-test does not catch: weak batteries that hold voltage during a two-minute exercise but die under three hours of real load. Fuel line issues that show up only when the engine runs long. Transfer switch wear that only matters when the grid actually drops.

If your generator has not been professionally serviced in the last year, call us now. We service Generac, Kohler, and other brands across Milton, Pace, Pensacola, Gulf Breeze, and Cantonment. We are a factory-authorized Generac dealer.

We will prioritize storm-cone customers in the order calls come in. Wednesday afternoon and Thursday slots still open.

Here is what people miss about their AC in October: it is not just fighting heat. It is fighting humidity.

The EPA recommends indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally in the 30 to 50 percent range. On a mild Gulf Coast afternoon that still runs muggy, your system may keep running to pull moisture out even after the temperature reads right on the thermostat.

That is not the system malfunctioning. That is the system doing its second job. The problem only shows up when it stops keeping up.

Before you call anyone about long AC cycles, do one thing: pull the air filter and hold it up to the light.

If you cannot see through it, that is your problem right there. A choked filter starves airflow, and starved airflow makes your system run longer for the same result. It is two minutes and it is free.

If the filter is clean and cycles are still long, that is when it is worth having someone look at it.

Summer is on the calendar in the past tense. Your AC did not get the memo.

If your system has been running long stretches through October afternoons and your electric bill is starting to notice, the first question is not whether it is normal for Florida. It is whether your AC is running differently than it did in similar weather earlier this year.

Josh Rogers, PE, MBA walks through what is normal, what is worth checking, and when to call.

The best time to fix your air conditioning system is when you're not desperate for it to work.

Right now, in late September, you still need cooling but the peak urgency of summer is behind you. Scheduling is easier, lead times are shorter, and a system checked now enters fall in strong shape.

That peace of mind is worth one visit. And the window to schedule it is open right now.
