What started as a problem around the back door turned into a lot more once the wall was opened up.

After removing the finishes, we found water damage around the door opening and along the bottom of the wall. At that point, it was no longer just a door replacement, the damaged materials had to be removed so the area could be rebuilt properly before everything was closed back up.

This is why exterior leaks can be tricky. The damage can spread behind the wall for a long time before you ever see much from inside the house.

Structural reinforcement work underway.

Sections of the floor framing had been cut to make room for plumbing, weakening the joists and leaving them in need of additional structural support.

Steel reinforcement plates were installed to strengthen the compromised areas and restore support to the floor system without having to completely replace the surrounding framing.

A look at the framing behind this new covered outdoor space.

Before the siding and finishes go on, there’s a lot that has to come together underneath, floor framing, wall framing, roof support, and tying the new structure back into the existing house.

Once it’s finished, most of this work will be hidden, but this is the part that gives the whole project its strength and shape.

Your roof is only as strong as the framing underneath it.

Rafters and trusses carry the weight of the roof and transfer that load down through the rest of the home. Problems can develop when attic framing has been cut or altered for mechanical work, modified during a previous renovation, damaged by moisture, or asked to carry loads it wasn’t originally designed for.

When those problems are found, the solution can involve reinforcing or rebuilding sections of the roof framing before they lead to sagging, movement, or damage elsewhere in the home.

Structural repairs aren’t always visible from the living space. Sometimes the real work is happening up in the attic.

What looked like a siding issue turned out to be serious water damage behind the wall. Once the vinyl siding was removed, we found rotted sheathing along the bottom of the home.

The damaged materials were removed and the wall was protected with a new weather barrier before being rebuilt. Repairs like this are about fixing the hidden damage, not just covering it back up.
