Outside of invasive torpedo and cogon grass, Zoysia turf grass has been the greatest challenge we have experienced for adding anything new into a landscape other than large trees and shrubs. The competition level of Zoysia is pretty intimidating.
Identifying whether or not you have Zoysia turf grass in your lawn is a key first step to moving forward with any additional landscaping.

While we're here, let's also take a second to talk about lawns in general. They blanket 40 million acres in the United States. This technically makes them the largest 'crop' in the country, yet they offer very little in return for the effort put into them. Lush lawns in Florida require frequent chemical applications that can harm our waterways. They also require a lot of water to stay green in the Florida heat.
It's time we rethink our lawns in general and try a new model. Lets shrink our lawns and plant native groundcovers into them. A lawn doesn't have to be perfect to be attractive, functional, and resilient.
