This Saturday, put autumn flowers and tangled branches in a silver skull. Subtle? No. Excellent beside your Halloween candles? Absolutely.

Think muted flowers, rusty autumn color, tangled branches. Think Hocus Pocus meets Practical Magic meets Sleepy Hollow.

On October 24, you’ll make your own Gothic Halloween centerpiece in that silver skull. I’ll teach you the foam-free mechanics and help you arrange. You can leave the flower expertise to me.

You’ll take the whole thing home, along with a very good excuse to get out every candlestick you own.

I spend most of the season encouraging flowers to look cheerful. For this workshop, I’m letting them get a little dramatic.

Come to Grey Dog Flowers on October 24 and make a Gothic Halloween centerpiece: burgundy flowers, rusty autumn colour, tangled branches, and a bit of attitude for your table.

I’ll teach you how to build your arrangement without floral foam, then help you as you go. You can try things, move stems, change your mind, and ask me what to do with that branch.

No arranging experience needed. I provide the flowers, vessel, materials and instruction. You take your finished centerpiece home.

Come on your own or book with a friend. I’ll help you get started.

The October 24 workshop is starting to take shape.

Muted flowers, rusty autumn color, tangled branches. The arrangement will be low, loose, and deliberately a little unruly.

I’ll show you how to build the structure without floral foam, then work through shape, balance, and flower placement with you. No arranging experience needed. I provide the flowers, vessel, mechanics, materials, and instruction. You take the finished centerpiece home.

A darker kind of flower workshop is coming to the farm.

On Saturday, October 24, I’m hosting a Gothic Halloween centerpiece workshop at the Grey Dog Flowers Farm Stand in Mills River.

We’ll work with moody flowers, seasonal texture, and foam-free mechanics to make a low centerpiece with considerably more drama than a polite fall arrangement. I’ll demonstrate the mechanics, shape, balance, and flower placement. You do not need floral experience. You do need to be willing to trim a stem and accept that one of them will probably refuse to cooperate.

Seriously, you’ll never guess 😏 I’ve only been trying to get this done since May, so August is a completely acceptable time to announce it.

But the real stars are the flowers. There’s something new EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. And this time of year is peak dahlia season - as if you need another reason to stop by.

I think we’ve gotten a little weird about flowers.

We save them for birthdays. We buy them when someone comes over. We give them to somebody else.

But honestly, I think you should be able to have flowers on your kitchen table just because you want them there.

That’s one of the things I love about the CSA. You don’t have to remember to go buy flowers every week. You just pick up your bouquet and put it in a vase.

And this year, if six weeks feels like more than you want to commit to, I’ve added a 3-week CSA Sampler.

It’s basically a way to try the CSA without jumping all the way in.

Registration is open now and closes Friday so I can figure out how many flowers I need to harvest for Saturday.

If you’ve been thinking about it, this is your week.
