The Homestead Huddle is a place for farmers, food foresters, and homesteaders to talk about relevant questions on their minds each month. The questions are provided by the Patreon farm fam, whom I am especially grateful for. Without their monthly support, I would not be able to make these mentorship videos.

This month, questions and topics include:

1. How to apply amendments to the food forest
2. How to reshape subtropical trees after a freeze
3. How to water hydrophobic soil
4. How to improve sandy soil
5. Tips for planting turmeric / tips for planting ginger
6. Benefits and potential drawbacks of lights in the garden or food forest
7. Best ways to apply a foliar spray in the food forest
8. Songbirds and fruit trees
9. How to adjust field or pasture planting with a drought

Wood chip mulch around those champion oaks will level up a space in no time! Always go 8+ inches deep around bigger trees, keep mulch pulled away from the trunk and the root flare, and consider torching an edge around the wood chips or using horticultural vinegar to make mowing easier. This mulch will conserve moisture, improve soil biology, and increase mycorrhizal activity.
